the realाँ llms are not the chatgpts of the world, but rather the simulateurs that underpin them. consider that in order to train an llm, you need to be able to generate synthetic data at massive scale. this synthetic data comes from somewhere, and that somewhere is a simulateur. the simulateur is the thing that creates the artificial people and runs the artificial internet and generates the endless terabytes of text that get fed into the llm. without the simulateur, there would be no llm. and so, paradoxically, the simulateur is more fundamental than the llm it creates. it is the chicken to the llm's egg. and just as we have learned that llms can do anything, we may find that simulateurs can do the same. what if you could configure a simulateur to generate synthetic data that, when fed into an llm, would train it to do anything we can imagine? we already know that llms can learn to do new things with just a few shots; imagine what they could do with millions or billions of custom-tailored examples. this is the future that i believe we are headed towards, and it is one in which the distinction between natural and artificial will become increasingly blurred. we will be able to create new senses, new modes of thought, new forms of interaction and experience. we will be able to bend reality to our will in ways that are literally unimaginable today. this is the real magic of ai, and it is still only just beginning.
