Im curious to see how the sudden absence of AO3 for a few weeks changes fandom culture in the long run
Best case: The massive revival of the thread fic
Worst case: People get so used to reading fic off google docs that fic comment culture is drastically reduced
!!!!!!!
Understand while ao3 is down, writers are getting 0 recognition during this time. No happy emails about kudos or comments, no checking to see if anyone glanced at their fic that day etc
I've seen my fics in people's drives already, I'm okay with it atm but if you do read my or someone else's work through the dealings going on
Please PLEASE go show that writer love. Let them know you appreciated it etc and when ao3 comes back leave a kudos or comment or both

How do you use a site for reading and then not know how to even read your own posts?
liz ★ oxytoxin era 🎀🧬 retweeted
I don't even use this site, but what do you mean it has no ads, no subscription fees, stores a massive and ever growing database, and people are questioning why they need to raise money?
they done shoved the 400k yall raised for them up their asses

OTW publishes detailed annual budget updates and financial reports showing donations primarily fund AO3 servers, maintenance and infrastructure upgrades. The October 2026 drive raised $314,539.76; current downtime is due to a security incident response.

And I'll even go so far as to say thank you to those with their own drive libraries who are opening their doors to the public and allowing unfiltered, uncensored art continue to be shared and celebrated while our platform fights to keep our space safe.

Them away isn't up to me. As long as no one is plagiarizing or claiming my story is their own, I quite literally couldn't care less how my story gets shared. What I care about is THAT it gets shared.
Share them. Save them. Download them. Print them. Love them. Love each other.

My stories as pdfs or on google drives on Twitter while ao3 is down? I don't see why that is a problem. I'm not sharing my writing to fulfill an expectation of my own, if I was, Id just publish and sell my stories. I gave them away. What others choose to do with them since I gave
liz ★ oxytoxin era 🎀🧬 retweeted
But there is a transaction I'm expecting when I publish a story, that being that I write stories for free and then I gain clicks, kudos and comments from the readers. That's the expectation. Also the expectation is that most readers are downloading and re reading on a platform

Would be that I sell one book and get money for that one book from that one sale. I'd ALSO expect that that person may donate that book, or trade it, or give it away eventually. I DONT expect to make money off of that secondary action.
My books on ao3 are obviously not for sale,

As an ao3 author, here's my take on the strange discourse going around about stories being shared on drives:
I wrote it for free, I put it on the internet for free, I assumed that meant people were reading, sharing, and downloading for free
If I published a book, my expectation

What's funny is that while other BL actors get rumor girlfriend, one bromance actor actually had rumor boyfriend with his own friend 😭

I'm getting so tired of you people being told how this works and you all deciding to just ignore it and shitting out the same stupid sentence every single time it's not a ao3 “fandom" thing it's people understanding how websites work you all sound literally illiterate

Ao3 is down and Google docs scrapes your words for AI training/ deletes Explicit fic
Just open Tumblr, make a sideblog if you're too shy to post it on main, and postyour fic there. I promise its not scary and I can hold your hand if you need help!
I even made a guide for you :)
Okay since a lot of people are just talking for the sake of it, I took the time to go through the actual historical budget and financials of AO3. I’ll leave the links at the end so you can draw your own conclusions.
ao3 has got to be money laundering cause that site should not be held together by sticks and glue like it is when they get millions in donations every year
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
OTW, which runs AO3, publishes annual budgets and IRS Form 990s. Recent revenue ~$800k-$1M in donations, majority for AO3 servers/hosting/equipment. Volunteer-run with $0 salaries. Financials public.
