This one got to me.
If someone asks you how much a single family's life is worth to the United States Navy, tell them the exact price: ten million dollars of steel. On April 29, 1975, as Saigon fell, a tiny two-seat wooden-and-fabric Cessna plane with almost no fuel left circled desperately above the American aircraft carrier USS Midway. Inside that tiny cockpit, a father named Major Buang-Ly had crammed his wife and five small children, including a baby. He scribbled a note on a map, wrapped it around his pistol so it would not blow into the ocean, and dropped it onto the carrier deck. A young American sailor picked up the crumpled paper and ran it up to Captain Lawrence Chambers. The note read: "Can you move these helicopter to the other side, I can land on your runway, I can fly 1 hour more. Please rescue me. Major Buang, Wife and 5 child." The flight deck of the USS Midway was completely jammed from bow to stern with military helicopters. A Cessna has no tailhook to catch carrier wires, and its pilot had never landed on a ship in his life. By every military regulation, Captain Chambers had been in command for only five weeks. Throwing millions of dollars of U.S. government aircraft into the sea without permission from Washington could end his career in a court-martial. Chambers looked up at the tiny plane circling in the wind with five children inside. He did not call an accountant in Washington. "Clear the deck," the captain ordered. Hundreds of young American sailors in yellow and green jerseys ran to the edge of the ship, put their shoulders against massive Huey helicopters, and shoved ten million dollars worth of machinery straight off the cliff into the South China Sea. Captain Chambers turned the giant carrier into the wind at twenty-five knots. The tiny Cessna came down, bounced once on the steel runway, and rolled to a safe stop with feet to spare. When the cockpit door opened and five small children stepped out onto the deck, three thousand American sailors roared so loud it drowned out the engines, and immediately passed around a hat to collect cash for the family's new life in America. When the math says a child's life is too expensive, an American throws the math into the ocean.

What if AI could do more than help marketers execute campaigns? 🤔 Autonomous decisioning helps brands move beyond manual choices, using customer signals to determine the next best action within defined goals and guardrails. The most obvious example of a dumb LLM being integrated into a support chatbot is Swiggy. It will just do anything to keep arguing with you without actually being able to check facts. The only hack I have figured out is to ask for a real agent to get a real conversation. It once wasted 40 minutes of my time, arguing that the order will be there in 5 minutes, but had to be ultimately cancelled as the delivery partner was stuck somewhere.

If marketers are the Avengers, Tesseract may be their Infinity Stone. Because in Agentic Marketing, the real power is not just the agent. It is the customer context and decisioning underneath it. That was my biggest takeaway from the CleverAI Summit by @CleverTap . Everyone is building AI agents. But an AI agent does not solve your Agentic Marketing problem if the customer data foundation underneath it is weak. One line from the session captured it well: “Everyone has custom agents now. There’s nothing new about it.” The real question is: what intelligence sits underneath those agents? For years, Tesseract DB has been CleverTap’s data engine, bringing together customer history and live behavioural signals. Now comes the next evolution: the Tesseract Decisioning Engine, using that context to decide what should happen next for each customer. A few lines from the sessions stayed with me: 1. “Life doesn’t wait for your next campaign.” Customer intent changes faster than campaign calendars. 2. “Live intelligence is not about interrupting customers faster.” Sometimes the right action is an offer. Sometimes another product. And sometimes nothing at all. 3. “Autonomy has to be earned.” Start with a defined problem, outcome and guardrails. Then progressively increase autonomy. 4. “Our ambition has to be to create growth. It can’t be just to take credit for it.” Their first-purchase demo showed a 25% uplift versus the control group. The shift from attribution to incrementality is an important one. 5. “The goal is not to take marketing out of the marketer.” The marketer remains the Avenger. AI agents provide the leverage. And Tesseract provides the context and decisioning power underneath them. What also made the summit useful was seeing Agentic AI in action and hearing real brand stories of how AI is moving from experiments into everyday marketing workflows. I had the opportunity to do a podcast with Anand Jain earlier this year. What struck me now was how quickly the platform has evolved since that conversation. Credit to @helloanand Anand Jain, Sunil Thomas and the CleverTap leadership team for making what feels like an orbital shift. Not simply adding AI features to CRM. But moving from: CRM → Context → Decisioning → Agentic Marketing Having used CleverTap at Lenskart and across a few other companies and clients, I have always liked its balance of usability and progressive capabilities. Now that Tesseract foundation is becoming much more interesting. Because even Avengers need an Infinity Stone.

I walked into a coffee shop in Seattle and ordered an expresso. The barista froze. He had a curled mustache and a small tattoo of a coffee bean. Everyone knows men like this live to tell you there is no X. The whole line went quiet and waited for the correction. He looked at me for a long time. Then he turned to the machine. ONE EXPRESSO! MAKE IT EXPRESS! His coworker slammed the handle. EXPRESS LANE OPEN! The cup was in my hands in eleven seconds. As I reached the door, he leaned over the counter and said it quietly. There is no X, brother. But for you, there is.

October 2nd always reminds me of of two cars. The first, a Fiat purchased by Lal Bahadur Shastri in 1965 when he was Prime Minister. He had to take a loan of Rs 5,000 which was closed by his wife with the pension she received after he passed away in Tashkent. The second, a broken down Ford car. The Ford used to be drawn by oxen, and Mahatma Gandhi would proudly call it his Ox-ford when bemused visitors would comment on it while visiting Sevagram. Two of our greatest leaders were born on this day, one who was grounded enough to roam around in a broken down car drawn by oxen, and the other with so much integrity that he could not afford to buy a car outright when he was the Prime Minister of this country. Mahatma Gandhi stood a frail 5'5" and Shastri just 5'2". And yet they were giants!
