4 months ago I signed up for a half Ironman to force myself to get fit again. At that time I couldn’t even run a 5k without my back hurting. It’s been super fun to work on my fitness as a project. Some recap/learnings:
- I ended up training for 2.8h/week on average and was happy with my time & no injuries. I didn’t have any endurance sports background. Definitely don’t need 10h/week like what people day.
- AI coach: Used a LLM wiki instead of off-the-shelf stuff. Fed it some books, put it on @NousResearch, and gave it my life (garmin, 8 sleep, calendar, bloodwork, dexa scan etc).
- It got really good at adapting plans based on my biometrics & progress, and giving specific feedback like fixing cadence & vertical oscillation.
- Best investments: Chest HR monitor and bike fit.
- Basically every problem is caused by tight hip flexors.
- Eating and drinking properly during the race is way more important than I expected.
- Total cost ~$3.5k: bike $1600, signing up $600, bike fit $450, and ~$1k in shoes, clothes, gear, extra food.
- Hardest parts on race day: Last 5k of the run; having to eat almost 2k calories while exercising; driving home afterwards.

Wanted to share with everybody what I’ve been working on! And some behind the scenes of the journey
In the past 6 months we’ve produced a cheaper, more efficient seeding material, trained a hyper-resolution AI weather model, and operated 100+ cloud seeding flights for the governments of Texas and New Mexico.
Recast Systems is coming out of stealth. Here’s some of the research we’ve been working on. (1/n)
Eileen Gu recently went viral for her *surprising* Teen Vague rant on the use of AI in CAD design
"sure they can write a kernel and extrude some shapes, but the feature tree and drawings? they are just the products of a much larger engineering process. it’s like, you’re trying to build a machine that can only write down the answer. you need to solve the context problem first before we see meaningful integration of ai in mechanical design."
Yesterday I finally reached my freediving goal of 40 meters and I’m very happy. It took me almost a year to get over the cold and darkness of lake berryessa, which is the only place to practice depth around SF
Video is me going to 10m. Past 20m it becomes pitch dark. One time I got lost from the rope and shat my pants. That’s why everyone should wear a lanyard.
If you’re also into freediving let me know and we should be friends!
This is why onshape is so goated. You go out on a skateboarding break and come back at 11 pm to a new feature added. There is internal thread visualization now.
I built it myself
Come build it with me.
Recently, my favourite object has been the 3/32” ball end hex driver from BONDHUS. It works with both 4-40 and M3 socket head cap screws, which are two of my favourite fasteners.
