Few things that I learnt by building Highlayer: - BitVM is interesting, but only a patch to a deeper problem and it has too many tradeoffs. - Real covenants, like OP_CAT, could be implemented, but it will take time before they are accepted, if ever. There are still significant risks associated with these covenants that are currently under active research. If they finally get implemented, BitVM will be pretty much useless and any Bitcoin Layer 2 will be able to benefit from them. - It would be quite easy to fork an EVM layer 2 stack and add some marginal improvement, but this is not the way. We chose a more challenging path with Highlayer by designing our own VM, data availability system, and parallelization mechanisms. We believe these efforts will lead to meaningful improvements for the Bitcoin ecosystem.

Data Availability problem, but 7 years before it was discovered. petertodd.org/2013/disentang… (Thanks @peterktodd ). Bitcoin is where crypto innovation happens/happened.

It’s one thing to say you believe in the censorship resistance of Bitcoin. And another thing to take it seriously. But we made it our duty.

The reason why the crypto industry as a whole is stagnating, and meme coins are booming is very simple: developers feel insecure about themselves, and people feel insecure about them. Back in the days of crypto innovation, just the fact of code being open source was enough for people to be assured of its security. But right now, that's not the case, as people have lost money due to hacks, vulnerabilities, and are simply fearful of novel technologies, fearing they might have vulnerabilities. That's not the way forward - innovation should be cheered, not hindered, even at the cost of accepting risk. Otherwise, we as a crypto industry, and humanity as a whole, will experience stagnation and "meme coin era", where the only thing you can do is "safe" one. VCs prefer to invest in coins/projects that are "certainly safe". Exchanges give priority to listing projects with a "well-vetted codebase" and demand ridiculously expensive security audits for even the slightest novelties (and at the end of the day, these audits usually still miss most challenging attack points, like supply chain attacks). People, in various ways, require projects to be built with "established technologies" - essentially preventing innovative projects from gaining momentum. This fear about "not battle-tested technology" has also spread to developers - they are now afraid to build new decentralized apps as it will not be "scrutinized enough", and developers rarely have enough resources for audits and similar activities that could increase their confidence. Remember, trying to decrease the risk will inevitably decrease the gain. Even in the worst case, the partial loss of capital is not the end of the world if that's the price of cryptocurrencies not going into stagnation mode, let's accept it. I highly recommend you read @pmarca's "The Techno-Optimist Manifesto" at a16z.com/the-techno-optimist… and apply it directly to your life. Devs, just f-ing build! Do think about security, do NOT think about scrutiny. It will come with time, and lack of it doesn't make your project less "serious" or give an actual reason not to use it in daily lives, invest in it, or do serious production things with it. Don't pay attention to decelerationists who want to stop your innovation, as otherwise, your most "safe" option is just building a meme coin on an "established platform". Users/investors/exchanges - do use, invest, and list novel systems, get along with the risk of innovation. Don't be the person who rides a horse because cars are too novel.

Cryptocurrency is comprised from 2 things - crypto (cryptography) and currency (economics). Usually any well formulated blockchain problem/task has 2 solutions - "crypto" solution (cryptographic one) and "currency" solution (economic one).

This election, the spotlight is on Bitcoin as an "asset". However, once people begin to realise its true nature and intrinsic value, a shift in perception will occur. In 2-5 years post-election, this understanding will spread widely. A censorship-resistant, tamperproof, decentralised digital ledger, which we can NOW extend with smart contracts. We are the only blockchain that can extend the network with smart contracts while still inheriting Bitcoin's decentralisation and security but also adding 50k TPS like Solana due to our hybrid execution (parallelisation) and SSDAS. The crypto community is already aware of this potential. The rest of the world will soon follow. .@brockpierce is right, it is the "most" decentralised currency, but definitely the most secure blockchain. Need to build smart contract dApps on L2s that inherit its decentralisation and security while remaining highly scalable. 99% of builders in the BTC eco space are just building centralised networks while using BTC as a marketing ploy. We're the only one that does it properly. We have also become the most decentralised network, second to only Bitcoin. Finally, someone said it. Most BTC Layer 2s are OP / Arbitrum stacks forked onto Bitcoin just because "Bitcoin is the most decentralised blockchain." Then, they proceed to use external data guarantees to manage their data, which introduces centralisation and fraud, ORs, which introduce challenge period; all of which are totally at ends with the philosophy of Bitcoin - a decentralised, censorship-resistant, tamperproof ledger for digital transactions. Then to make things worse, state to use BitVM for "turing completeness" which does not even work yet. Most are very low-effort/marketing ploys. Overall, zero inheritance of Bitcoin's security and decentralisation, but VCs fall for it and retail do not know better. Our approach: Intro highlayer.io/blog/highlayer-… Approach to scalability and innovations highlayer.io/blog/our-soluti… Our take and approach to rollups highlayer.io/blog/Rollups-Ex…

From centralised to even more centralised. Pure scalability is not everything. By now, we've deviated so far away from the Bitcoin philosophy of decentralisation that it's unimaginable and new "innovations" for "data storage" and "scalability" are making things worse. We achieve 50k TPS while inheriting Bitcoin's decentralisation Aaron, Austin. We're about to upscale dev outreach. Our approach is very important, happy to chat. The other reason, which is mainly overlooked now, is that Bitcoin is the most decentralized and secure blockchain. Its transaction ledger is immutable, meaning it cannot be altered or tampered with. This level of security and decentralization is crucial, and we have to build on that foundation rather than relying on middle-of-the-pack VMs on blockchains which are highly centralised... e.g. Solana (data is stored on Google... ...) The current industry standard for data throughput, especially in the case of Solana, but also applies to most "innovations" today, is far from satisfactory. There is an urgent need for a change in the status quo. Our approach medium.com/@highlayer_io/int…
