A 15 year old made fun of a local councillor on Facebook—photoshopped bunny ears on him, said he dressed like a “rent boy,” etc. So the councillor reported the kid to UK police and he was arrested. The councillor: “I was targeted by a child I had no way of dealing with.”

One small way to support freelancers as we enter the end of the year: tell them about how their projects performed. Was their article one of the most-read on your site? Did their writing help products sell?

Actress Susan Sarandon being arrested earlier today for protesting Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech at the United Nations. One is speaking out against genocide, one is committing it. One was arrested, one was not.

The top graph shows our county-level COVlD map using the CDC's Standard Benchmarks. The bottom map shows the downshifted levels under the CDC's new system. This really makes a difference for early warning in the middle categories. I've highlighted 5 areas.

The CDC raised its benchmark for levels of the Covid virus in wastewater, adjusting a key metric for assessing the disease’s transmission. As a result, officials may now classify a level that once counted as high transmission as moderate instead. nbcnews.com/data-graphics/cd…

People who become right wing because they get annoyed by leftists are weak willed, most leftists are annoyed by leftists every single day.

Nailed it. Every essential market: housing, healthcare, childcare, insurance…. has been restructured into a tollbooth designed to extract maximum yield from working families.

Its terrible that this country now is built to extract every dollar people make so that billionaires can measure each other's yachts.

Kobo quietly changed its Price Match Guarantee. It still credits the price difference if you find the same ebook cheaper elsewhere, but the extra 10 percent is gone. 📉 Kobo no longer beats competitor prices. It matches them.

people aren't ready to accept that "literary fiction" is actually the place for: "genre stories that break load-bearing genre conventions." a mystery that isn't solved? a romance that peters out into melancholy? a science that isn't fictioned??
The strangest thing about these various genre debates is I’m not sure why people are bothered that a romance requires a Happily Ever After or why a mystery requires the mystery to be solved. What do you get out of being contrarian to the genre? Why is it so important to change?

And this month @JSTOR has reduced its monthly allowance of free articles by 90%, from 100 to 10. Why? Meanwhile, the local library has got rid of they physical runs of almost every journal "because they're on JStor anyway". So spend your rationed curiosity wisely, dear reader....
Google Books is becoming a desert. Its regress is real: the knowledge we were assured was both safely stored and freely available, which led libraries and schools to get rid of their books, has retreated into the shadows. The internet of 2026 knows less than the internet of 2010.
