We applaud @merrillcollege and its dean for defending student journalist Cat Murphy.
It's encouraging to see a school defend the very principles it teaches.
Merrill College students know their rights as journalists.
"Cat Murphy is a master's student at the University of Maryland, credentialed as a reporter for our Capital News Service and doing the job we teach our students to do. Cat recorded openly in a public space alongside other news outlets, and that is her legal right," Dean Rafael Lorente (@DeanLorente) said. "I'm proud of how she handled herself in a difficult situation."

Capturing here all statements speaking out against Trump’s targeted bans against news outlets he does not like. Mostly for my own records of this dark development for democracy. /1

So incredibly sad. Eliana believed in journalism and her enthusiasm was infectious. She reminded viewers why journalism matters.
💔 for everyone who knew Eliana and George.

Because after getting so much wrong with no accountability no one believes you. That’s largely the fault of journals and journalists that lost credibility, not the fault of the people who lost faith with. Physician, heal thyself.

Great piece from First Amendment scholar Matthew Schafer on the press freedom legislation the Trump admin has proven we urgently need, from the PRESS Act to protect source confidentiality to Espionage Act reform to stop criminalization of newsgathering.
