In January 2017, in @atlblog, I made a bold prediction: "By 2027 the legal industry will produce many billionaires, but few, if any, will be practicing attorneys." Nearly 10 years later, I'm back on Above the Law to see how it aged. Legal tech has now minted 16 unicorns. So … I like my odds. A LOT. Next up: tracking down the legal tech founders I profiled back then. One had a nearly billion-dollar exit, another runs legal for OpenAI, and at least one probably became a sommelier, which is also relevant to us lawyers. Have seen headlines like this for decades. Will be interesting to see if they show show up in the numbers. Historically, profits and revenue are up nicely YOY for Biglaw despite the “news.” I know the AT&T team. They are taking this stuff seriously and are smart.
Over the course of this year, AT&T General Counsel David McAtee has stopped paying law firms to do many assignments traditionally done by junior lawyers, instead sending the work to a team of AT&T lawyers using AI. Read @sara_randazzo's latest column reut.rs/4rSGwPr

AI is pretty pretty pretty good.
When my first AI book was published in 2024, the best AI could do 4 minutes of human work with a 50% chance of success When I turned in the draft of Co-Existence earlier this year, it was 17 hours When it was published two days ago, AI could do 17 weeks open.substack.com/pub/oneuse…

This is a trend that I expect to continue to beat all expectations as agents are adopted. AX is now more important than UX for me in a lot of ways.
Muse, Instinct, and Grokbot really changed agentic commerce From what we can see on @link, total transactions increased by 38x, volume by 20x in September What are people having their agents buy? Retail was the most popular, then travel, and then music and entertainment

Proud partner of @WeAreLegora. Congrats @MaxJunestrand and team.
We have raised a $550 million Series E at a $8.8B valuation to accelerate our growth in the U.S. and globally, and deepen investment in the Legora aOS, our agentic operating system for legal work. @Atreidesmgmt leads this round, alongside new investors @BaronCapital, @CapitalGroup, @Fidelity, @GladeBrookCap, and @jpmorgan. Every major existing investor is participating. We’re grateful to have partners who share our ambition and our long-term view. We build AI together with the people who use it. That’s always been our approach. Our customers help shape what we build, pushing us to go further on the work that matters. This is the most exciting time in history to be a lawyer, and we’re lucky to be in the middle of it. Read the full release: legora.com/blog/series-e

pretty much every major ai company now has a personal agent product except google: meta → muse anthropic → duet openai → dots spacex → bots slowly but surely the competition is shifting from who has the smartest model to who owns the persistent relationship with the user. this will be even more the case going forward. you're seeing this because we likely reached peak intelligence required to power most of the worlds workflows probably earlier this year if not late last year.

We’re opening a research preview of Claude Duet, a new app where Claude works as a proactive agent. It comes to you with what needs your attention, completes tasks you ask of it, keeps working when you step away, and checks with you before it acts on your behalf.

Everyone says AI will kill litigation. They have it backwards. AI is about to make litigation explode. For 100 years, American litigation has been limited by one thing. The hourly rate. A breach of contract worth $40,000? The lawyer wants $25,000 to fight it. You settle for $12,000 and call it a win. A customer stiffs you for $8,000? Not worth the demand letter. You eat it. A former employee walks off with your client list? Your lawyer says "we can send something, but the motion practice alone will run you $30,000." You let it go. That is how most American disputes end. Not in court. In a spreadsheet, where someone decides the fight costs more than the loss. Now change one number. A demand letter that billed 4 hours now takes 4 minutes. A motion to dismiss that cost $15,000 in associate time now costs $15 in compute. A 60 page discovery response that took a paralegal two weeks lands in your inbox by 7 a.m. What happens to the spreadsheet? Every "not worth it" flips to "why not." Economists have a name for this. Jevons paradox. In the 1860s, steam engines got more efficient. Everyone expected Britain to burn less coal. Britain burned more. Cheaper power meant more factories, more railways, more uses nobody had planned for. Bandwidth got cheap. We didn't send fewer emails. We built Netflix. Legal drafting gets cheap. People will not fight less. They will fight more. And here's the twist nobody is talking about. Not all legal work moves the same way. Cooperative work shrinks. Both sides want the same standard NDA, AI hands it over in 60 seconds, the deal closes. That market dies. Adversarial work grows. The moment your opponent has AI, every filing they send forces a bigger reply from you. Every motion breeds a cross motion. There is no ceiling on an arms race. Then it all hits a wall. AI can 10x the filings. It cannot 10x the judges. Federal courts already have cases waiting years for trial. State courts are worse. So picture it. Ten times the motions. The same number of judges. Clerks drowning. Dockets that stretch into the next decade. Something breaks. I don't know what. But it won't be boring. If you're a young litigator, here's what that means for you. The paperwork was never going to be your career. The machine has that now. The growth is in the fight. Learn to take a deposition. Learn to find the hole in a 60 page brief that a machine wrote in 10 minutes. Learn to stand in front of a judge with 300 cases on her docket and make yours the one she remembers. The machine drafts. Someone still has to win. Make sure it's you.

Time to buy that pied-à-terre!
The worst housing market over the last decade is somewhere people would least expect. Manhattan. Values in New York County dropped by -11.9% from September 2016 to 2026, falling from 1.41M to 1.24M. Which is an astounding -51.2% drop in inflation-adjusted terms. Condo/co-op/townhome values inn Manhattan are now at record lows compared to incomes and rents. Making it one of the most undervalued housing markets in America, despite it's still expensive price tag. Values have actually started turning recently, up 3% YoY. Meaning it could be a good time to buy in NYC. Check the value trends for your county at: reventure.app/map/cMk5iPrSfq

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy told Ben Horowitz (co-founder a16z) that Amazon is out of compute until beyond 2028 Ben thinks this is not like the dot-com bubble: back then the network was built before there were enough users, while in AI there is more demand than anyone can supply. ---- Full video on "All-In Podcast" YouTube channel, (link in comment)
