So I shamelessly used this tweet more times than I care to admit at work to share my must have tools. Therefore I made it into an article to be enjoyed: jeinfalt.com/blog/DeveloperT…
New job => new box!! Must haves for me:
- VSCode
- oh-my-zsh
- Jump
- Tig
- Autocomplete
I’m INEPT without them #Software #Developer #SDeT #SoftwareEngineer

Junior needs mentoring or oversight. Mid level can work without much oversight. Senior can run projects with some complexity and mentor. Staff can run more complex and cross team projects and have more impact outside the team. (2/2)

It took me almost 7 years in tech to realize if a company doesn’t give me the title I know I deserve, I could just find another job.
Still 🤯

Trunk based development is brilliant not only because it’s just simpler to work with but it forces you to work in smaller batch sizes.
Which forces you into having to adopt more rigorous engineering practices and work more methodically.

Human-centered PSA: Try to avoid using the word "you" during code review.
"You should remove this variable"
vs
"This variable isn't used, it can be removed"
Reviews are about the code, not the author.

On Technical IC vs Engineering Leadership
From a DM:
"What is your take on the technical vs management route? I don't see myself become a people manager, or doing product management anytime soon...
"[But] I believe that there is a diminishing returns on technical skills"

1. outline talk in Google docs
2. think of how to make what I have interactive & entertaining (theme, stories, analogies, pop culture)
3. write out talk in notes section of blank slide deck
4. design deck
5. practice with notes verbatim (5x)
6. practice without notes (5x)

How I categorize UI tests:
Unit: Test 1 component by itself. Mock dependencies if necessary, but ideally pass them in via props.
Integration: Test the interactions of multiple components against a mock API.
End-to-end (E2E): Test the UI in the browser against the real API.

One of the biggest cultural shifts in my experience from Mozilla to Stripe is code review speed. At Mozilla you'd often wait days and have to hunt down people to review PRs.
At Stripe my PR is often reviewed within 10 minutes.
That makes a _huge_ difference for shipping fast

Amazon is well known for prizing clear writing.
One well written design doc can save you *thousands* of wasted dev hours. And when you've shipped, you can better advocate for your team by writing up your achievements.
Writing is a career superpower. Here's a guide.

You know why testing is hard for beginners? Because they approach it as a way to validate instead of design. Hard to test could mean your design is bad. Tests increase confidence. Complex tests are not useful over the long term. Work in small loops: test, code, make test pass

Going on 3 years now and ^^ is still the best article I have seen around code review.
Go check it out!

Time for #DevDiscuss!
Tonight’s topic is… improving code reviews.
- Any tips on giving effective feedback in code reviews with someone you don't know well?
- Have you ever felt embarrassed after a code review? How did you handle it?
- How do you handle feedback anxiety?
This!! 1000X this! If it ain’t in the linter, you don’t get to complain… oh “review” 🙄
Also, code review shouldn’t be pedantic about syntax.
If it matters that much put it in the linter rules. #devdiscuss
- git bisecting : easy if you remember the commands ✅
- testing builds on test instances : easy ✅
Doing a manual bisect of a regression using prod builds :: 🤷♂️
Things they don’t train you for but #yolo!!!
