Enjoyed speaking with @ObserverUK 's Barney Macintyre about @AnthropicAI's risk disclosures in its leaked prospectus.
Anthropic: the scariest pitch deck ever Anthropic’s plan for a public offering reveals existential risks, vast spend, a concentration of customers and a special vehicle to keep founders in control. Can it keep the show on the road, asks @barneymac bit.ly/4dd0FcU

Fascinating analysis of the Yemen chaos from @zriboua of the @HudsonInstitute, who gave a great talk last week in my @Harvard_Law seminar "New Horizons in the Middle East."
My latest on the Houthis and the broader regional order: Over the past week, Saudi Arabia has come under attack—on two fronts. First, in Yemen, the Houthis seized the port city of Mocha on September 10 and advanced along the Red Sea coast toward the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a vital waterway for Saudi exports. Meanwhile, drones from Iraq struck Saudi Arabia’s East-West Pipeline, the roughly 750-mile artery carrying oil from the eastern fields toward Red Sea export terminals. The attacks coincide with the Iraqi government’s September 30 deadlinefor nonstate groups in the country to disarm, and with mounting U.S. and Israeli pressure on the Islamic Republic that arms and sustains them. They also come amid a much broader campaign against the regional proxy system that Tehran has spent decades building. Since the U.S. war with Iran began on February 28, Operations Epic Fury and Economic Fury have placed the Islamic Republic under severe military and financial strain, while the U.S. Treasury Department has targeted Iranian oil exports, shadow-fleet tankers, financial intermediaries, and foreign procurement networks. thefp.com/p/houthi-defeat-sa…

Interesting failure of governance at @Nature. Scientists peer review for the scientific journal for free--building up the prestige of the brand--while the Editor-in-Chief & her team get to trash the brand with politicised opinion journalism. xitter.cf/SashaGusevPosts/status…
Replying to @clairlemon
They have a news team that functions just like a newspaper, with an editorials editor, bureau chiefs, etc. typically with reporting/journalism experience. This team is independent from the scientific peer-review team.

Proud of the @deborah_project lawyers, who tirelessly defend the rights of Jewish students and teachers in K-12 and beyond.
A Philadelphia public school set aside a room for one religion — and punished non-Muslim students who walked in. An important ruling for Jewish students and their families in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.  A federal judge has denied, in substantial part, a motion to dismiss filed by three School District of Philadelphia officials, sustaining our clients’ claims surrounding the School District’s establishment of a school room “designated for one religion” – Islam – and punishing non-Muslim students for entering. The Court agreed with our claim that this arrangement violates the First Amendment’s Establishment Clause. The Court also approved of our Due Process claims arising out of punishments school officials imposed, when school records showed our clients were innocent, and when the school ignored basic procedural protections.   Making new law in the District, the court also held that the school officials were not entitled to qualified immunity.    The plaintiffs are represented pro bono by The Deborah Project, which litigates to protect the civil rights of Jewish students in America's K-12 schools and in colleges and universities. dailywire.com/news/jewish-st…

Maybe Claude's alignment guardrails won't allow it to be used to deceive humans? Maybe try Grok? @OrinKerr
If you tell AI to write in a style designed to beat Pangram—designed to get a 100% human written score—can Pangram still tell it's AI-written? Just tried this. Pangram said it was 100% AI-written. Here's was my request, to Claude Opus 5.

My former MIT colleague Yossi Sheffi has documented how unhinged hatred of Israel, combined with the unwillingness of modern universities to state and enforce principles, led to a hostile climate for Jews at MIT (only starting to be addressed by the administration). | Professor Yossi Sheffi sheffi.mit.edu/book/unsafe-m…

If true, good news for @AnthropicAI investors. Better to be run by @DarioAmodei & co-founders than by trustees of Anthropic LT Benefit Trust w/out skin in the game. And gives Anthropic even bigger leg-up over @OpenAI. See corpgov.law.harvard.edu/2026…. @coryweinberg @matt_levine
Anthropic’s co-founders are looking to secure greater voting control ahead of its Mega-IPO. The Information’s @coryweinberg explains: "They are essentially using this IPO as a chance to cement more hard power. And in the corporate world, that means voting power."

If you're an academic (and can prove it with an ORCID), consider signing a petition protesting the University of Ghent's suspension of a postdoc for exposing academic misconduct, a blatant violation of academic freedom (as always, regardless of your agreement with all of the whistleblower's views). johnarmstrongmaths.com/openl… johnarmstrongmaths.com/openl…

The rabbis can detect antisemites, and try to flee them, but think it's divine will if their followers die. @LahavHarkov tabletmag.com/sections/arts-…
This is a rabbinical dynasty that has been unable to detect an antisemite for over 80 years. They said the same thing about emigrating from Hungary when the Nazis took over (while the grand rabbi himself skipped town) so I wouldn’t take their advice.

Thanks to @aedmans for speaking up against political bias in academic publishing.
The erosion of meritocracy in academia extends far beyond Jason Arday. Strategic Management Journal, one of the top-tier journals in management, accepted a paper showing negative market reactions to the appointment of Black executives. After acceptance, it was changed because readers objected. This is extremely unusual. Editors and reviewers can raise concerns, but readers play no role in the review process. Once a paper is accepted, it might later be retracted if serious errors are found which affect its scientific accuracy, but not just because people don't like it. Moreover, once a paper is accepted and posted online, it becomes part of the scientific record. When I was Managing Editor of a journal, sometimes the publisher or the authors made a minor omission (e.g. leaving off the acceptance date or an acknowledgement). The publisher refused to simply add the missing information; they would only issue a corrigendum, leaving the original version intact. Even if a paper is retracted, it still typically remains visible. Here, the original manuscript has completely disappeared. So, the scientific community can only see the version that readers wanted, not the one the authors wrote and the editor/referees accepted. Remarkably, it has been treated even worse than some retracted papers: their original versions remain visible; this one does not. sms.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/…

Irish Government’s New €53M Jet Unable to Land in Fog After Officials Remove Israeli-Made Navigation System 🚨🇮🇱🇮🇪 Ireland bought a €53M Dassault Falcon 6X to stop ministers from getting "stranded" abroad. The punchline? They intentionally ripped out the plane's standard "FalconEye" low-visibility navigation system because it is "manufactured by Israel". Now, the shiny new VIP transport cannot handle basic Irish winter fog and requires higher visibility thresholds to land. 📷DOD

It's hard to make predictions, especially about the future.
Tucker Carlson's favourite "political scientist", John Mearsheimer, and his ATROCIOUS predictions on the war in Ukraine: Feb. 2022: "I don't think Russia is going to invade." Sep. 2023: "The Ukrainians are doomed to lose." Jan. 2024: "It's ridiculous to think Ukraine can hold the line in 2024." Apr. 2025: "It's unimaginable Ukraine will hang on beyond 2025." Jul. 2026: "The Russians are slowly moving forward." The Jim Cramer of foreign policy predictions.
