The Jets should give Geno Smith a fully guaranteed one year, $15 million contract extension.
Convert the remainder of 2026 to the prorated minimum salary + a signing bonus. 2027 would be a $5 million base salary + $10 million option bonus. Add four void years to the contract.
Who I think the Jets coaching staff should be in 2027, if Aaron Glenn doesn't turn things around in 2026
Head Coach: Sean McDermott
Offensive Coordinator: Brian Daboll
QB Coach/Pass Game Coordinator: Ken Dorsey
Offensive Line/Run Game Coordinator: Bobby Johnson
Tight Ends Coach: Alfredo Roberts (Holdover)
Wide Recievers Coach: Ricky Proehl
Defensive Coordinator: Bobby Babich
Defensive Line Coach: Eric Washington (Holdover)
Linebackers Coach: Al Holcolm
Defensive Backs Coach/Pass Game Coordinator: Steve Wilks
Special Teams Coordinator: Chris Banjo (Holdover)
Assistant Special Teams: ?
If the Jets trade Breece Hall just before the deadline, they would gain $10.26 million in cap space over the next two seasons minus the cap space for whoever they sign to replace his spot on the roster.
With the following moves, the Jets salary cap space remaining is $10,085,662 for the 2026-27 regular season. This puts their 2027 offseason budget at $84,128,735.
A hitter's job is to get on base. Stop with the bull crap that you don't bunt during a no-hitter. Any way to get the offense going should be acceptable.

Pre-free agency cuts
Knowable adjustments

Buffer for in-season spending
The roster cuts at the bottom of the spreadsheet are the post-camp roster cuts.
The Cap Carryover factors in a projection for remaining cap charges to hit in the 2026-27 regular season.
Please stop using Mount Rushmore as a metaphor for the top four of something. That's not why Gutzon Borglum chose Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, and Roosevelt for the monument.
Washington represents the start of the nation. Jefferson represents expansion. Lincoln represents preservation, and Roosevelt represents the growth into a global superpower.
He chose them because they represent four key stages in American history.

Eff it
McDermott, Daboll, and Dorsey to the Jets. Let’s see if their success really was the product of Josh Allen’s talent.
The lone first time offensive-minded HC was Coslet, who averaged fewer than seven wins per season. Kotite and Gase were on their second jobs, and they combined for 13 wins in four seasons.
There are three phases where a head coach can come from, and it doesn’t matter which one they pick from. That won’t determine how good he is.
The Jets have hired 12 head coaches since 1990.
8 were defensive minded first time NFL head coaches:
(Carroll, Groh, Edwards, Mangini, Rex, Bowles, Saleh, and Glenn)
Those 8 have a combined winning percentage of .430 Groh (9-7) being the only one to finish with a winning record.
The 3 offensive minded coaches during that span:
(Bruce Coslet, Rich Kotite, and Adam Gase)
Let's try a new approach.
So, I did some bad math yesterday, when it comes to the very unlikely Garrett Wilson trade.
Current total 2026-27 cap charges: $33,324,819
2026-27 dead cap charges depending on the week:
Post-Week 9 trade: $32,787,410
Cap Savings: $537,409
Just before the deadline, after Week 10: $32,956,433
Cap Savings: $368,386

Adam Gase is the only head coach -- not in his first coaching stint -- since the NFL expanded to a 16-game schedule to have five fewer wins or more in the second year with the team than the first.
Let me explain how the dead cap works with a Garrett Wilson trade, again. Any Jets trade would result in the Jets being charged the following:
2026
$170,823 per week for each week up to when he's traded
$2.75 million for his signing bonus proration
$4 million for his option bonus proration
$250k for his workout bonus
2027
3 years left at $2.75 million each for his signing bonus
4 years left at $4 million each for his 2026 option bonus
They would save the remaining money from his base salary this year and eat $16.25 million next season, for a total net loss -- based on week traded -- of either $14,541,767, 14,712,591, or 14,883,414 in cap space combined. That's not infeasible.
