Reading an excellent book by @jonathanmahler Gods of New York which focuses on the years 1986-1990 when I was on the @NYCCouncil. Up to the section about Donald Manes, deceased Queens BP who eventually committed suicide after 2 tries. I recall greeting him on day of his first attempt at Tweed courthouse post inaugural Ed Koch bash and he looked ashen & disoriented. I was puzzled & then on breaking news that night he was found bleeding in his car by cops in a Queens highway,

An amazing book that's part social history, part political history, and part urban history. It seamlessly weaves the rise of Trump, the AIDs crisis, racism, violent crime, and media into a complete history of NY in the 80s.
