There is little value in having a multidisciplinary team if the members donât work in an interdisciplinary way. Without this approach, the team is little more than a collection of individuals going about their day, doing their own thing. Not really a team at all...

Listen to Prof of palliative medicine @rmacleod5; pall care social worker @jowoodSW; Violet Guide & manager Rose Dillon; executive coach Terri Soller; ICU specialist @IA_Mitchell; & me.
Each conversation shows one of us 'thinking aloud' as we reflect deeply on a conversation.

Told today by 2 palliative care units they are being closed & turned into COVID units. I know hospital management would not have wanted to make this decision. They are running out of options. Living with COVID đ˘ @AHSRI_UOW @PCOCPallCare @ANZSPM @PCNAust @CroakeyNews @UOW_VC

When I visit aged care facilities, residents talk about their loneliness. They talk about a focus on tasks - that no one is seeing the real them. The person behind the task. A person with a rich life history. A person with likes, dislikes, fears, worries, interests & wisdom.

Pressuring people to be positive turns emotional intelligence into emotional labor.
Toxic workplaces police peopleâs emotions. Healthy workplaces offer freedom of emotional expression.
Showing stress or sadness isn't unprofessional. It's human.

Life can be messy, uncertain & complex.
The human experience doesnât fit into neat little boxes.
Sitting with distress is challenging.
But, if someone can sit with my pain, then it gives me the sense that I can carry all of that complexity inside of me and survive.

Your value as a human is not determined by your usefulness to another person, institution or system.

We don't talk enough about grief & loss with chronic illness/disability. The loss of your health, the life that could've been, control over your body, certain opportunities, financial security, people who don't understand. It's a continual feeling not something you just get over.

#MedicalTwitter, this is not OK.
Please look at this story, & the responses, to see the uphill struggle we have to talk with compassion about CPR to people who are sick, frightened & not accompanied by their loved ones during this time of covid.

There have been times where Iâve sat on the floor with a person as they cried and screamed and wailed with raw grief. I didnât talk, I just sat. Sometimes I held them.
There are times where people donât need words. They need presence. They need warmth. They need safety.

Knowing a lot about a research area and having the skills to be a great leader are not the same thing. Academia would be so much healthier if we stopped conflating these things.

I was talking to about 100 final year #socialwork students last week about how/why a focus on #selfcare is not enough, is individualised coping about wrongs that need to be held as collective responsibility. Wish I had been armed with these excellent words from @conamorgloria đđź
