xitter.cf/JimFergusonUK/status/2… 🇬🇧 IN THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT, I SPOKE AS A PROUD BRITON — AND A FRIEND OF ROMANIA. We may speak different languages, but we share something powerful: love of our countries, respect for our families, and the determination to remain free. On 14 October, I joined fellow journalists and delegates in Brussels to discuss elections, freedom of expression and the right of citizens to determine their own future. I carried a simple conviction into that room: OUR NATIONS BELONG TO THEIR PEOPLE. Britain’s history helped establish a principle that every generation must defend: those who govern us must themselves be subject to limits, scrutiny and the law. From Magna Carta to the long struggle for parliamentary accountability, our freedoms were built through courage and sacrifice. We have a duty to protect that inheritance — and to speak when those same freedoms are threatened elsewhere. That is why Romania matters to me. I travelled there. I spoke with parliamentarians, journalists and political leaders. I listened to people whose concerns deserved to be heard, and brought their voices to an international audience through my reporting and documentary work. In Brussels, fellow panellists raised serious concerns about Romania’s annulled election, public trust, censorship and the independence of the press. They called for transparency and a return to the electorate through constitutional democratic means. Those concerns deserve answers, evidence and open scrutiny. A free press must question power. Citizens must be able to challenge decisions that affect their future. And every institution claiming to defend democracy must accept scrutiny of its own actions. My Christian faith, my love of Britain and my respect for the sovereign nations of Europe inform where I stand. I want our children to inherit countries where they can speak freely, practise their faith, cherish their traditions and choose their leaders. I closed by thanking the patriots in the room and urging them to keep going. Because, as I said that day, “we all speak the language of patriotism.” To my friends in Romania, Britain and across Europe: stand firm. Keep asking questions. Keep speaking.
