I made this observation before ... It feels large scale modern AI systems are going the same way as experimental high energy physics. So be prepared to soon crack >1000 authors on papers regularly.
Google's Gemini paper has about 950 co-authors :) That's 10 full paper pages that list the author names. In comparison, the method description is only a single page (3 pages if training is included). Don't use "𝑒𝑡 𝑎𝑙." when citing the paper! arxiv.org/abs/2312.11805

Hybrid architectures FTW! – at San Francisco, CA
PowerInfer - a high-speed inference engine for deploying LLMs locally. Just came across this super interesting project on speeding up inference. It's not MoE but it's a simple approach that exploits the high locality in LLM inference to design a GPU-CPU hybrid inference engine. Hot-activated neurons are preloaded onto the GPU for fast access, while cold-activated neurons (the majority) are computed on the CPU. This approach significantly reduces GPU memory demands and CPU-GPU data transfer. It achieves an average token generation rate of 13.20 tokens/s, with a peak of 29.08 tokens/s, across various LLMs on a single NVIDIA RTX 4090 GPU. It's on only 18% lower than that achieved by a top-tier server-grade A100 GPU. It also significantly outperforms llama.cpp by up to 11.69x while retaining model accuracy. There is a lot more innovation around inference that's coming fast. Really encouraged by the study on sparse computation to enhance the computational efficiency of LLMs. It's now possible to use PowerInfer with Llama 2 and Faclon 40B. Mistral-7B support is coming soon!

Humans largely learn from human-generated data. Machines currently learn from human-generated data. It makes sense for machines to learn from machine-generated data.
I've heard some skepticism about 'synthetic data'. When you think about it, human data is just synthetic data generated by humans.

This is pretty much what I've been saying. Long-term insists are missing the discount factor in their risk assessment. If you include this the most relevant challenges are on a decade time scale not infinite horizon... – at San Francisco, CA
In AI, the ratio of attention on hypothetical, future, forms of harm to actual, current, realized forms of harm seems out of whack. Many of the hypothetical forms of harm, like AI "taking over", are based on highly questionable hypotheses about what technology that does not currently exist might do. Every field should examine both future and current problems. But is there any other engineering discipline where this much attention is on hypothetical problems rather than actual problems?

OpenAI is now entering the same realm as other social media companies. Amplification of certain news sources (in this case the Fox News of Germany) without accountability to present nuanced and balanced opinions will repeat the same mistakes again. Sad to see ... – at San Francisco, CA

Probably an unpopular opinion these days ... but: #opensource #AI is not equivalent to #opensource #software and #opensource weights are not a product ... Imagine any pharma or drug company just releasing their stuff without any responsible testing ...

The recent wave of "AGI arrives in <X> years" by tech pioneers appears more driven by a fight over the right to define AGI, rather than factual statements. Claiming a moving goal post is more about legitimizing yourself rather than advancing understanding ... really annoying ...

Healthy computation graphs give me an outsized amount of happiness 🤗. There is something magical about understanding and managing the complexities of large scale distributed systems ... 🪄

The power of systems thinking is rooted in good abstractions. They don't give you solutions. Rather, they let you ask questions in the right language, giving you 80% of the solution. Success lies in thinking about good abstractions most of the time, execution is fast afterwards.

⚗️ Science: Simple things interacting at scale lead to emergent complexity. 🚂 Engineering: To handle complexity at scale simplicity is the name of the game. I feel blessed to work in an industry where you need to leverage both aspects to be successful!
