For me, Europe began in Ireland 🇮🇪.
Today at the conference in Dublin, I shared some personal memories. As a teenager, I visited Ireland several times through a programme for children affected by the Chornobyl disaster. I stayed with Henry and Marian Deane in Roscrea, County Tipperary.
I learned English here, and even a little Irish. I discovered another culture. But most importantly, I discovered another way of life.
I saw that people could speak freely. That they could disagree with their government without being afraid. I was too young then to understand what democracy really meant. But I could feel what freedom was. That is something you never forget.
Ireland helped shape me as a person, my values and my European identity. Long before I learned about the European Union, I experienced European values through ordinary Irish people. Through a family who opened their home to a girl from Belarus. Through neighbours who treated me as one of their own.
Ireland also taught me another important lesson: You can love your country, your language and your traditions while remaining open to the world.

This entire block permanently smells of damp piss.
How the fuck to people work there? Wait for the bus?
Its actually revolting and always stinks.
This is succinct
Back in 2010, the minimum wage was £12,064 and the 'higher earner' band started at £43,875.
You only paid 40% tax once you were earning 3.6x the minimum wage.
There was clear incentive to progress, learn and aspire for more.
As things stand, you now start paying 40% tax once you earn £50,270 which is just 1.83x the minimum wage.
If it was the same multiple as 2010, the 'higher earning' band would be £98,841 and everyone below this amount would be paying 20%.
Someone on £98,841 is effectively losing out on £9714.20 net per year if the bandings had simply moved in line with previous multiples relative to minimum wage.
This is one of the reasons why the middle class is being eroded and why there's a cost of living crisis in the UK.
This is the British man living in Westminster - more than likely in full receipt of every benefit imaginable.. council house in expensive part of town, disability allowances etc etc.. still tries to blow the whole thing up..
We’re only a few years behind the Brits unfortunately

To usłyszeli ode mnie liderzy Europy w Brukseli.
If this stuff ever reaches our shores properly I hope we give the Garda special powers to kick their heads in…

As the Irish Govt buckles to the Unions,
I am reminded of one of my favourite & most iconic political speeches from Lee Kuan Yew.
Singapore Airlines Pilot Association enforced a work-to-rule demanding 30% pay increase, during 1980 elections.
Lee gave them a blunt choice:
immediately halt the industrial action and get back to work, or he would ground Singapore Airlines, fire every pilot, and rebuild the national carrier from scratch!
“Whoever governs Singapore must have that Iron in him, or give it up!”
“This is not a game of cards. It is your life & mine”
“I spent my whole life building this, and as long as I’m in charge nobody is going to knock it down”

Found this photo while researching the piece and just thought it was a remarkable image of defiance. Edendork’s pavillion, named after Des Fox, was destroyed in a loyalist arson attack in 2008. With smoke still smouldering, they went ahead and played a league game the next day
