This is one of the scariest charts out there. The S&P 500 has touched the upper trendline resistance for only the 3rd time ever. The last 2 instances it happened led to the 1929 Great Depression and the 2008 financial crisis. Should we be worried?

This is my third "educational" post: Hedging: Long-Short and Pair-Trading Tactics Traders sometimes need more than a simple up or down view. Hedging holding offsetting long and short positions, lets you stay active even when the broader direction is uncertain. Instead of betting everything on one outcome, you spread risk and focus on relative performance. I'm not saying you should use this strategy always, it's a strategy I like to use when I'm not sure about the direction but I expect a decent move up/down and I think I can profit from it no matter which direction it takes. I also use it to cover spot investments. 1. What Hedging Means in Crypto Perpetuals A hedge is a position opened to reduce or offset the risk of another position. Example: if you hold spot Bitcoin but expect a pullback (and don't want to sell your spot), you can open a short BTC-perp. Any drop in price hurts your spot but helps your short, cushioning the blow. The goal is capital preservation, not maximum profit. You also need to know hedging reduces risk but also caps upside. If the market rallies sharply and you are hedged, your gains will be smaller than if you were outright long because the short leg eats into them. Then hedging is a risk-management tool rather than a profit-maximisation tactic. In active trading, however, you can deploy hedges tactically: instead of protecting just one asset you already own, you can open simultaneous long and short positions in different assets to try to earn regardless of broad market direction. That is where the long-short strategy comes in. 2. Long-Short Strategy When you are unsure whether the market will rise or fall but suspect that some coins will behave better than others, a long-short approach makes sense. You go long an asset you believe is strong and short one you view as weak, holding both legs concurrently. Your long benefits if the market moves up; your short pays off if the market heads down. Crucially, the two assets should be correlated with the general trend so that they tend to move the same way, but by different magnitudes. This limits overall market exposure and shifts the profit driver to their relative performance. In practice, a strong coin long and weak coin short hedge each other. If the market as a whole rallies, the strong coin should rise more than the weak one, giving a net gain. If the market dumps, the weak coin is likely to drop harder, so the short’s profit exceeds the long’s loss. Either way, you earn on the spread between the two. The focus moves from guessing the next macro swing to identifying which assets will outperform or underperform. You cover risk in one asset by trading another correlated asset. If you hold Bitcoin but expect Ethereum to prove more volatile, shorting ETH can partially hedge your BTC exposure. Likewise, an altcoin investor might short BTC perps to offset systemic market risk. The aim is to neutralise overall beta: your net result no longer depends on “everything up” or “everything down” but on how much your long rises versus how much your short falls, or vice versa. 3. Pair Trading: Market-Neutral Hedging Pair trading formalises long-short hedging in a systematic way. It is designed to be market-neutral. You open a long in one asset and a short in another at the same time. One leg naturally offsets the risk of the other. Ideally, the two assets belong to the same sector or share a common driver and have a strong positive correlation, so their prices usually move together. Pair trading profits from relative value, not overall direction. In traditional markets, you might buy an undervalued stock and short an overvalued peer, banking on the spread converging. Crypto works the same: choose two coins that normally move in tandem but where you see a divergence in fundamentals or momentum. Simple example 1: long ETH / short BTC if you expect ETH to outperform (ETH/BTC ratio rises). Simple example 2: long BTC / short a basket of weak alts if you fear a broad correction, since alts tend to drop harder than Bitcoin in bear phases. Because you always hold a long and a short, the net P&L depends mainly on their relative change, not the market trend hence the label market = neutral. Achieving this neutrality requires care. The two assets must stay meaningfully correlated; if they decouple, the hedge can fail. Position sizing should also reflect each coin’s volatility: if your short is twice as volatile as your long, you might size it at half the dollar value That keeps the pair roughly beta-neutral. 4. Key Steps for Building a Long-Short Hedge 1. Select “strong” versus “weak” assets Identify long-leg candidates with solid fundamentals, positive catalysts, or visible relative strength. Pick short-leg candidates that look overvalued, face negative news, or exhibit structural weakness. Selection must be done coin by coin with clear reasoning, not randomly. 2. Check correlation (pair trading) The two assets should share a positive correlation or common driver. Without this, one leg may not offset the other. Ideally they belong to a related space—two DeFi tokens, or a Layer-1 versus its ecosystem tokens. 3. Balance position size Allocate capital so the dollar impact of a typical market move is similar on both sides. Often that means weighting by volatility or beta rather than splitting 50 / 50. 4. Monitor and manage risk Track the relative spread. Set take-profit and stop-loss levels based on the difference between the two, not their standalone prices. Use strict risk controls: two leveraged positions mean double the scope for error. Factor in funding rates, which can eat into returns if you stay hedged for long periods. 5. Practical Example: The Solana-ETF Rumour Imagine rumours surface that the SEC will approve a Solana spot ETF. That catalyst would push SOL and Solana ecosystem coins higher, but the broader market outlook remains murky. A trader who wants upside exposure yet seeks protection might structure: Long: SOL + selected Solana ecosystem tokens - ETF narrative could make these rally hardest; if the market dips they may hold up better thanks to fresh demand. Short: BTC or/and lagging altcoins - No ETF catalyst; likely to fall more in a downturn or rise less if the market lifts. Scenario A: market lifts on ETF buzz: SOL jumps, say, +15% while BTC rises only +5 %. Long gains outweigh short losses = net profit. Scenario B: rumour fizzles, market dumps: SOL slides −5%, BTC and weak alts drop −10% to −12%. Short gains surpass long losses = net profit again. Either way, chosen correctly, one leg compensates the other. If selection is poor e.g., shorting a coin that actually has stronger tailwinds than SOL, the strategy can fail. Hence, rigorous analysis is essential. 6. Final notes Hedging with crypto perpetuals is an advanced technique that, when executed properly, delivers controlled risk and steady returns. By combining long and short positions in thoughtfully selected assets, you isolate yourself from unpredictable market swings and focus on leveraging relative advantages. It is not fool proof: correlations can break, or your strong versus weak thesis may prove wrong. Discipline is therefore critical, research each asset, monitor the positions, and adjust or exit swiftly if conditions change. In short, a well-built long-short or pair trade lets you “bet smarter”: you surrender some upside to avoid full downside exposure, turning market uncertainty from a threat into an edge. For traders navigating crypto’s turbulence, mastering these hedging techniques can mark the difference between a seesawing portfolio and a stable record of consistent gains. END: If you liked the post, I appreciate any feedback or any other suggestions for future posts. Let me know what else you guys want me to talk about, or if I should make an individual post of any of the things I talked about in this post, but way extended/deeper.

2. Your exits matter 10x more than your entries. This was the most counterintuitive lesson. I tested trend following systems with random vs optimized entries - only 10-15% difference in returns. Random vs systematic exits? Over 200% difference.
