Our new paper shows how restrictive abortion policies can increase infant mortality. Some— but not all— of the increase we found was likely due to forced continuation of pregnancies with known lethal congenital anomalies.
Absolutely heartbreaking study to work on.
Breaking: Infant Deaths After Texas’ 2021 Ban on Abortion in Early Pregnancy | Women's Health | JAMA Pediatrics.
Hats off to the JHU team.
Our team has a similar study that we will now preprint that confirms this.
A crucial and horrific finding. jamanetwork.com/journals/jam…

Birth certificate data are great, but they are inadequate for studying maternal morbidity!

I’ve been saying for decades that women would be imprisoned for abortions—they are in prison already for stillbirths, miscarriages & other pregnancy-related crimes—& anti-abortion advocates kept denying they would be so cruel. The gloves are off. nytimes.com/2023/07/20/us/ce…

How do abortion restrictions impact birth rates?
Our analysis in @JAMA_current studied the impact of the 2021 Texas Heartbeat Act on counts of lives births. We find ~9800 births above expectation between Apr-Dec 2022 (3% increase) in Texas.

👏Really important new work from @davidJXgonzalez @rmfrosch @PhySciEng on racial disparities in oil and gas exposure in CA featuring some beautiful and saddening figures. Look at the gradient of increased exposure for NH-Black Californians to higher-producing oil and gas wells:
We already knew that oil and gas wells are more likely to be in Black, Latinx, and low-income neighborhoods. In this new study, we learned that these disparities were worst for Black people living in neighborhoods with the most intensive oil production 1/n doi.org/10.1029/2022GH000690

San Francisco's paid parental leave program shows that designing policy with an equity focus is essential to reach the people who need it most.

Know any great scientific grant writers, ideally with PCORI (or NIH) grant experience? Would love any recommendations for an individual or org that has a health equity approach.

Our new paper on San Francisco's PPLO is out. Though paid leave has clear and well-documented benefits, the impact on health outcomes can be hard to detect in a population-based study. This partly has to do with limitations in who the policy is actually reaching. 👇
