Another piece of evidence for my pet theory that nobody really knew what the hell was going on in 2024, millions of people just meme'd themselves into forgetting who Trump was. The electoral equivalent of waking up feeling horrible after a bender.
This piece on the massive shift of young voters back to Democrats (or against Republicans) has a quote from a 23-year-old Latino guy who voted for Trump in 2024 that captures how so many young voters feel right now: "I just don't know what I was thinking."

Dario Amodei: AI may be uniquely well suited to autocracy and deepening repression.
“We already see it in the kind of surveillance state possible with today’s technology.”
“AI can make individualized propaganda and break into computer systems.”
“It could surveil everyone in a population, detect dissent everywhere and suppress it.”
“You could have a huge army of drones that could go after each individual person.”
“It’s really scary, and we have to stop it.”

I suspect that, when the final decision was made, more Brazilians preferred Lula—who, for all his faults, still represents the old Brazil (coastal, Catholic, Portuguese, SoDem)—over another Bolsonaro, who embodies the newer Americanization trend in Latin America, complete with its neo-Pentecostal craziness.
In a sense, Lula stands for traditional Brazilian culture and mores, whereas Bolso reeks of foreign influence and distinctly un-Brazilian ideas.

The naysayers are getting embarrassing. Every day, people are using AI to make incredible breakthroughs and answer some of the toughest questions around, like "what do I like about my child?"

American conservatives are constantly bemoaning the decline of aesthetic standards and calling for a return to classical Roman architecture, but are now forced to defend the Cheesecake Factory. A constant tension between the Brooks Brothers patrician and the Kid Rock populist.
incompetent vibe coders have flooded every software-related community with projects that
-no one will ever use
-could have been a PR
-took 3 days to make
-won’t see a single commit after v1.0.0
this is an overcorrection but the anger is very understandable
The r/OpenSource subreddit has officially banned anything using AI. In any way. Violators will be permanently banned.
Which means… r/OpenSource will ban anyone submitting anything that, in any way, involves… the Linux kernel.

carl sagan is like pynchon in the sense that you read his work and are absolutely floored that intellectuals of that time knew the score — that the political critiques that seem so revelatory now were also obvious then, but got buried beneath layers of bullshit, as they always do
