🇦🇺 She survived the execution of her fellow nurses. Then, for three and a half years, her friends kept that survival a secret.
On February 16, 1942, Japanese soldiers ordered 22 Australian nurses into the sea at Radji Beach, on Bangka Island.
Two days earlier, the nurses had survived the sinking of the SS Vyner Brooke while fleeing Singapore.
Now machine guns opened fire behind them.
Vivian Bullwinkel, 26, was hit. She fell into the water and lay motionless until the soldiers left. Of the 22 nurses, she alone survived.
For 12 days, she hid with a wounded British soldier, tending him despite her own injury. Eventually, they surrendered. He died soon afterward.
In captivity, Vivian found other nurses who had survived the shipwreck. She told them what had happened on the beach.
They understood the danger: their captors must never discover that a witness to the massacre was still alive.
For the rest of their imprisonment, they never spoke of it.
Through hunger, disease, and years of captivity on Bangka and Sumatra, they protected her secret. Eight of the captured Australian nurses died before freedom came.
Vivian survived to testify at the Tokyo war crimes tribunal and spent decades honoring her murdered colleagues.
She died on July 3, 2000, aged 84.
During captivity, silence had helped protect her. Afterward, she made sure the world heard their story.

🇨🇦 A FRIENDLY PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT TO AMERICANS TRAVELLING ABROAD.
We’ve heard that some of you sew Canadian flags onto your backpacks to get a warmer welcome overseas.
We understand. Canadians are generally pretty well liked around the world, and we’re flattered that you’d like to borrow a little of that maple-leaf magic.
But to our friends around the world, a few tongue-in-cheek tips for spotting a counterfeit Canadian:
• We won’t ask if you speak American.
• We won’t speak loudly and slowly in American, assuming that will help you understand us better.
• Many of us speak at least two languages. Some speak three or four or more.
• We won’t look shocked when we discover your country doesn’t use dollars.
• We won’t assume everyone knows who our prime minister is.
• We know Europe isn’t a country.
• We won’t always be wearing shorts, white socks and running shoes.
• We won’t wear a baseball cap at the dinner table in a restaurant.
And one final question: Has anyone, anywhere, EVER heard of a Canadian sewing an American flag onto their backpack to get treated better?
We’re genuinely curious.
To our American friends, if you’re going to borrow our identity, at least learn how to pronounce Saskatchewan.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. 🇨🇦

October 26, 1917 — Canadians Begin Their Assault at Passchendaele
Into the mud, under fire, and against overwhelming conditions.
On this day in 1917, Canadian soldiers began their offensive at Passchendaele, Belgium, in what would become one of the most gruelling chapters of Canada’s First World War history.
After months of fighting, the battlefield had been reduced to a devastated landscape of flooded shell craters, shattered trees, barbed wire, and seemingly endless mud. The ground was so treacherous that simply moving forward, carrying supplies, or evacuating the wounded could become a life-threatening ordeal.
Under Lieutenant-General Arthur Currie, the Canadian Corps had spent days preparing for the assault, improving roads, positioning artillery, and planning a series of limited advances.
On the morning of October 26, the 3rd and 4th Canadian Divisions went forward.
The 3rd Division advanced toward Bellevue Spur, encountering fierce German resistance from fortified positions. To the south, the 4th Division fought toward the higher ground leading to Passchendaele.
Progress was painfully slow. Soldiers struggled through deep mud while exposed to machine-gun fire, artillery bombardment, and counterattacks. Some units secured their initial objectives, while others faced intense fighting for every stretch of ground.
The human cost was devastating. Over the first three days of the offensive, approximately 2,500 Canadians were killed or wounded, a sobering indication of the price being paid for every advance.
For those on the battlefield, October 26 was not a moment of celebration. It was a day of extraordinary hardship, courage, and loss.
Today, 109 years later, we remember the Canadians who advanced into those terrible conditions, those who never returned, and those who carried the memories of Passchendaele for the rest of their lives.
We will remember them.

Jones defended the government's decision to tighten its rules for funding out-of-country drug treatments.

Charles Kushner, a New Jersey real-estate developer and the father of Trump’s son-in-law Jared, became the U.S. Ambassador to France in 2025. Introducing himself to the French public in a social-media video, he said that he knew “a limited amount about France.” He does not speak French; he has never lived abroad. He served time in federal prison for illegal campaign contributions, tax evasion, and witness tampering. The last crime, a blackmail scheme that involved hiring a prostitute to seduce his sister’s husband, suggests a dubious approach to conflict management. Yet Trump saw fit to hand him one of the most coveted posts in American diplomacy, the seat once held by Thomas Jefferson and by Benjamin Franklin, stewarding the relationship with America’s oldest ally.
Since taking up his post, Kushner has earned a reputation for meddling in domestic French politics at sensitive moments. “I don’t see how he can possibly affect the opinions of the French government by regularly irritating them,” the president of the American Academy of Diplomacy said. Lauren Collins reports on Charles Kushner’s Ambassadorship and a new cohort of MAGA diplomats who are underqualified for their posts and overeager to impress the boss back in Washington: newyorker.com/magazine/2026/…

I’m deeply alarmed by Israeli actions in the occupied West Bank.
Settlements are expanding, evictions are unrelenting with Palestinians driven from their lands, settler violence is surging, Palestinian families are being assaulted.
We are seeing an increasingly coercive environment, with the spectre of ethnic cleansing looming ever larger.
This must end.
There can be no durable peace in the Middle East without the realization of the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people to self-determination.

Putin has deployed a fleet of trawlers to map the UK’s undersea cables, The Telegraph reports.
Russia may be laying the groundwork for attacks on critical NATO infrastructure. An analysis by The Telegraph identified more than 500 instances in which Russian trawlers either circled above vital communications cables or spent extended periods traveling along their routes.
The publication examined vessel movement data spanning 4.5 years and identified 17 trawlers that spent long periods moving at low speeds near cable routes. Naval experts say this behavior suggests the vessels may be mapping the seabed using sonar and underwater drones.
Russian vessels may be charting the precise locations of fiber-optic cables that carry data underpinning billions of pounds’ worth of economic activity every day. The information gathered could enable Russia to target this infrastructure in a future conflict with NATO.
Damage to these cables could disrupt banks, hospitals, transport systems and mobile communications.

Vamos aproveitar essa oportunidade histórica de aproximação entre nossos países. Estamos esperançosos com a conclusão do Acordo MERCOSUL-Canadá.
Sigamos juntos.
Congratulations, President @LulaOficial, on your re-election in Brazil.
The relationship between Canada and Brazil has flourished under our partnership. Let’s seize this opportunity to make it even stronger, together — to create major new trade opportunities, protect the environment, and build greater prosperity for both our peoples.
