guy with a decade is getting 65-70 post tax
very good for someone looking for a break, wanting to spend time with kids or parents
Microsoft's voluntary exit package is a masterclass in why job hopping is not always the smartest career move.
The package offered for Indian employees : 3 months base pay plus 1 month for every year of service.
Do the math.
Someone who joined Microsoft 8 years ago is walking out with 11 months of salary in hand. That is nearly a full year of runway. Enough time to find the right next role without desperation. Enough capital to start something of your own. Enough breathing room to actually think.
Someone who switched every 2 years chasing a 30% salary hike is walking out with 5 months. Maybe less.
Yes the job hopper probably earned more along the way. But they also gave up something the market rarely values until a moment like this arrives. Tenure. Loyalty. The compound interest of staying.
The Indian tech industry spent a decade glorifying switching. Every LinkedIn post was about how someone left Company A for a 40% hike at Company B. Nobody talked about what they left behind.
Severance packages, vesting schedules, pension benefits, long service awards. These are not relics of a boring corporate life. They are the financial reward for the people who stayed when everyone else was leaving.
The next time someone tells you that you are leaving money on the table by not switching, show them this Microsoft math.
Stability has a price. It also has a payout.
everytime large companies downsize, some of their employees eventually go on to create new businesses and organizations

i think just too many ppl were way too leveraged
and not diversified sufficiently
margin calls kicking in or close

Interesting bio from a 17 year old Dario
- multiple time USAMO qualifier, 2nd at BAMO, Physics olympiad camper, Sumac
- Calc BC as a freshman, Real Analysis, Abstract algebra in high school (back in late 90s/early 2000s, where acceleration was much rarer)
- sub 5 mile time!
brutal IQ mog
wtf do people expect
"there's no job security ... even in quant finance"
folk have seriously unrealistic expectations
in fact burnout hits well before the security angle kicks in
Can't understand all this panic about LTCG STT nifty etc. and the flurry of articles around it
How much are we down since late 2024
Maybe 5% max
Ok, perhaps 15% if u account for USD/inr
Look at 2010-now as a whole, it's just a tiny window of a dip

I disagree with this whole thesis. Nifty is down 4.4% since Jan 1st 2025. That is hardly catastrophic when you consider that Nifty returned a 14.25% CAGR in the preceding 6 years. How much did the current market darlings return in that period?
To claim that a 4.4% DD over 1.75 years has destroyed careers and track records is borderline delusional. If you can't suck up a couple of years of sideways movement, buy some FDs.
If STT were made zero tonight, it wouldn't move the needle for *any* investor. The govt would just have less revenue. Taiwan has higher STT than India and has zero capital gains all this while. It has almost identical returns in 2020-24.
those in their 20s taking up jobs post-btech/MBA should look at what's going on
and not get drowned in loans
will be quite comfortable @ 35
lot of teams with strong systems knowledge @ MS
networking, compilers, OS internals
so this layoff will be diff from standard b2b b2c layoffs
never know if some of them in BLR/HYD go on to create companies or products of the kind we really need to see @ the systems level
seems like a super generous VEO
except for those paying off huge loans
folk should consider it and take a break if they're feeling burnt out esp if they've already accumulated quite a bit
