I enjoy talking to people looking to work on climate change (often from big tech due to my background and network). Below is my #1 piece of advice and a few things I always send to people to read as they ramp up.

I'm a former defense attorney and currently a civil liberties attorney with no political dog in this fight. I watched the video at least 10 times from different angles and at different speeds and waited to offer an opinion, which I still reserve the right to change if additional information changes the calculus. It is very clear that the officers instigated the confrontation. The woman initially tried to wave them past her. ICE officers have no authority to search a US citizen or arrest her (unless there's probable cause to believe she's harboring undocumented individuals, not a contention here). A woman surrounded by masked, armed men who have no law enforcement authority over her has every right to try to escape. Video shows her steering wheel is turned to the right, clearly an attempt to leave WITHOUT hitting anyone and steer clear of the officer standing towards the front of her car. That officer had time to step to the side, which is where he was when he shot her. Even a real police officer would not have the right to shoot at her for trying to flee. This is well-established in the case law; deadly force may not be used simply to prevent someone from getting away. Given that the ICE officers had no law enforcement authority to begin with, AND the video footage shows she was trying to escape a perceived threat, not to kill anyone, the crime is all the more inexcusable. I'm praying for the victim's family, especially her children. I'm also praying for all the conservatives who are so unprincipled and lost they're excusing this terrible crime, and gloating over a death that will leave three young children motherless, because of the victim's politics.

Apparently, the @Mariners are playing too well and the rules have been updated to require 8 balls for a walk?!?

Just. Wow. As we went over Mexico and the U.S. this morning, I caught this sprite. Sprites are TLEs or Transient Luminous Events, that happen above the clouds and are triggered by intense electrical activity in the thunderstorms below. We have a great view above the clouds, so scientists can use these types of pictures to better understand the formation, characteristics, and relationship of TLEs to thunderstorms.

China will be the world's first electro-state, the global clean tech hegemon. Especially as the Republican Party forces the US to leave the field of competition uncontested and dig into our role as petro-state. The 21st century vs the 20th.
The big story is not just China’s shift to renewable energy but its rapid progress in electrification, which is a strategic priority for China’s central government. @ember_energy

And they would even more if we had cost reflective pricing! We’ve told people for years to turn off their AC when they’re not home to “save energy,” so everybody comes back home at the same time, and everybody’s air conditioners turn on at the same time. Instead, we should be pre-cooling houses when we have abundant solar energy in the middle of the day to lower that afternoon spike. It uses more energy, but energy is not actually the scarce resource — capacity is. Demand side management is not about turning off your air conditioning when it’s hot, it’s about turning it on at the right times to minimize overall cost while keeping you cool.
One of the simpler concepts in modern power systems is that summer electricity demand spikes closely align with peak solar output.

The new Senate draft raises taxes on all wind and solar projects that haven't begun construction today unless they are placed service by end of 2027 and navigate complex, likely unworkable requirements to prove they don't use a drop of Chinese materials. After that, this bill ADDS A NEW tax on wind and solar projects that can't prove the same.

Simplify Gmail v3.2.4 is rolling out to all users. This is the first release of v3.2.x to all users and it has a lot of goodies. But mostly, it is a massive re-write of bundles that should improve performance and handling of focus. More at changelog.simpl.fyi

Today's AI era is creating the greatest perfect storm for designer founders: an incredible technology that is reaching maturity coupled with software tools that let small teams build software at 10x the speed for a fraction of the cost. We should be seeing hundreds of designer-founded companies spring up! But we aren’t. Which left me wondering: why aren’t more designers starting companies right now?? After months of research and conversations we believe we have the answer to why AND our first act in doing something to turn the tide. Today, we launch the Designer Founders website and Substack! We’re going to celebrate all the successful designers that have taken the path of entrepreneurship, share the ups and downs of their journeys, and attempt to inspire thousands more to follow suit. We also plan to equip this next generation of designer founders with resources, connections, and capital to give them their best shot at success. It will take a village! We believe this will bring better products and services to areas desperately needing great design, while harnessing AI to better serve humanity. We can’t let the future be created by those that only focus on whether or not they could 🙂 (thank you Dr. Ian Malcolm)

DID YOUR VOTE GET COUNTED? Was your ballot accepted? Four years ago, I build trackvote.org which is simply a directory of how to answer these questions in your state. A few states don't let you check online but most do.

Even if you voted in a previous election, you’re not necessarily registered for this one. Here’s how to check your voter registration status before your state’s deadline.

Love this. And love the framing of "how long will we have endured > 1.5º" -- 1.5º is still the dad gum goal. We're just going to have to circle back to get there after we drive past it.
New preprint out today highlighting that the duration of a 1.5C overshoot matters. We find that all climate tipping points would be avoided if global warming over 1.5C is restricted to 30 years and peak warming kept below 2.5C. doi.org/10.5194/egusphere-20… @coxypm @UofE_Research

Although, it also feels a little like getting an extension the day the paper is due. Look, if we still get there in the *next* 10 years, it isn't that bad. 30 years above 1.5º looks plenty devastating

This is my favorite climate myth. YES, humans are responsible for a small percentage of emissions BUT we're responsible for ~100% of net emissions because nature pulls its share back down via the carbon cycle. We don't draw down our share. More at: skepticalscience.com/human-c…
"This is probably the biggest con that we've ever had." Geologist Prof. Ian Plimer: "There is no climate emergency... It has never been proven that human emissions of CO2 drive global warming." "Only 3% of emissions are from humans, the rest is natural... So if you're to prove that humans, and their emissions of the the gas of life, change climate, then you also have to prove that the natural emissions—97% of all emissions—don't change climate. That has never been addressed."
