Legion 44

As carbon dioxide continues to increase in our atmosphere, people fall into one of two camps: Those who watch things fall apart, and those who rise up to meet the challenge. @legion44earth is a new film highlighting the latter. 44 is the molar mass of CO₂. With this film, director @LeilaConners wanted to recruit people for the new legion that will solve the CO₂ problem. All around the world, people are finding new ways to combat climate change. Legion 44 showcases the work of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) as an emerging industry. Conners is a champion for optimistic people who believe we can do something to counteract the damage done. The protagonists of the movie are from scientific teams and startup companies around the world, experimenting with new methods to capture the carbon from the atmosphere and store it in a permanent way - which counteracts global warming. It is important to understand that all this work will only make sense when we have reduced our emissions by 90%. This is crucially important. But reductions will become harder and harder for the remaining emissions in the future, and then we will need carbon dioxide removal to finish the job and to reach net zero. This new industry will only be able to work at the necessary scale in 2050, when we start to develop the technologies now and then scale up. This film shines a light on the people already on this journey. And it is an inspiring sight! The world is going to be saved by nerds working with rocks, high-tech machinery, lab equipment, and algae. When we all pitch in, the necessary change is possible!
