A civilization in which the poor live more comfortably but have almost no realistic prospect of becoming powerful, independent or exceptionally successful through their own merits is not a superior civilization - it is the death of meritocracy in service of mediocrity under the banner of efficiency. Why would anyone bother trying to become the best at anything? There is no point.
A machine can do it better so it's not economically viable to do anything other than own the compute that powers that machine, meaning even if you're really good at it, it won't do anything for you - class positions becomes entrenched, with no amount of effort or talent being enough to transcend them if you're on the wrong side of that line, because the market will stop rewarding your talents.
Millions upon millions of people who define themselves by their jobs will be left purposeless. Most of humanity will be a serf class collecting welfare with no incentive to be brilliant or excellent or bother with anything, and will drive themselves mad descending into infinite leisure.
I want to be wrong about this. But I don't think I am. After all the condescension of the flawed analogy between the car replacing the horse, and then the cope about adapting by keeping a human in the loop and augmenting your workflow, only to end up at "so yeah you were right actually you will be made obsolete" is just fucking wild.

And these people tell us it is "quite terrible" that YOU have RAM in your computer.
Elon: around 1.2M Blackwells at Colossus 2 by end of year.
Same week, a clip of Sam Altman: DRAM in your computer is "being used five percent of the time", you want it in the cloud.
These tech oligarchs have fucking lost it.
Most of those chips are GB300 with 288 GB of HBM each. That is over 300 million GB at 1 site.
My rig has 96 GB of VRAM. Colossus 2 holds the memory of over 3 million rigs like mine.
OpenAI signed letters of intent for up to 900,000 DRAM wafers a month, close to 40% of 2025 output.
Micron closed Crucial, its consumer brand, to serve bigger customers.
Amazon, Microsoft, Google and Meta plan over $700B of capex this year.
And the problem is the RAM in MY computer?
Sam's 5% is even about right. I checked. My 4x 3090 averaged 4.4% GPU load over the last 24 hours.
I do not care. I paid for them. My prompts stay on my machine, and nobody can change my limits or take my model away.
The 3090 came out in 2020. Why the fuck do you even need it?
My rig has 256 GB of RAM now.
Keep your cloud, Sam. I am keeping my computer.

They main difference for normal people is that they now ask chat gpt instead of google.
Sometimes they get results faster, sometimes they end up killing themselves. Oh, computers got much more expensive and customer support got much worse. They noticed that.
Can anybody explain me what they are doing with "AI"? I do agree there might be form coding productivity - "lines of code" - boost.
But what do "normal" people get from AI? Cars don't drive themselves. Robots still do not exist. Real estate and banking is still working as it did. Construction, retail.

This is bad and will certainly cause some permanent damage, but it also does seem like the shovelware is not moving any copies.
The public is not stupid, and they are not happy with this. The avalanche will likely wane as soon as the avalanchers realize it's not profitable.

Luckily we now have DATA on what happens to motivation when the machine invades at scale. If other disciplines follow the same trajectory as math we are heading for a deeply nihilistic future.
Replying to @doomslide
why so confident though? perhaps pve increases or perhaps pvp changes in some unimaginable way?

So we're just supposed to leave the resources in the ground forever and never extract them? And if something can't last forever, then it's a "band aid solution"?

i can't express this enough: this is every single tech company right now. we are shoving ai in so many places and nobody is using it and everyone is delirious with joy over each release and then immediately forgetting it because of the next one that's really gonna be the one
And where in this delusion does "abundance" come in for the normal person?
It doesn't is the answer.
So far the only thing AI has been good for is transferring more and more of that consumer surplus to the big AI firms and leaving the rest of us holding the bag.
People love to shout out at things without realizing how much their lives change and that they yell about are integrated into their day to day lives
Got into a debate at a conf this week that the AI race has produced nothing of value for the average person yet was making tech oligarchs rich as another example. You can literally open your phone and get access to phd intelligence compute for generous free tiers. Several years ago, that was unimaginable
People envy and resent founders’ wealth despite the tradeoff of consumer surplus to founder/employee wealth generation being an incredible value prop

Our "leaders" have abandoned us to our own devices. The government only exists to loot from its citizens.
Thailand’s national budget = 3.8 trillion baht (Php 7.2 trillion).
Philippines national budget = Php 7.2 trillion.
One just announced an equivalent Php 100k subsidy for 1,000,000 households to install solar. Total value: Php 100 billion.
The other just announced a record Php 1 TRILLION in budget insertions, leaving the door wide open to the same practices that gave us the Flood Control Scandal and Ghost Projects Scandal.
