one reason why i find the conversation about young people being so online, conducted by older people, so annoying is that it’s rewriting history. plenty of us tried to resist the iphone-ization of everything and were literally laughed at or pushed out of jobs / society ourselves.
Joe Rogan just sounded the alarm on the male loneliness epidemic. “How many young men are virgins and have … no contact with women at all?” “Online all day.” “Watching porn.” “Playing video games.” “What kind of a future do these people have?” “Is it going to be 70-year-old people, all alone at home, staring at a screen waiting to die?” Mariana van Zeller: “It’s bad for young men right now.” Rogan: “What are they going to do?” “They don’t know what to do.” “They’re just locked in these boxes at their homes and just being fed online information.” “Young kids today have a very difficult time looking people in the eye.” “They’re so used to doing everything online.” Zeller: “There’s really no space for community.” “It’s sad.” Rogan: “What are we doing?” @joerogan @MarianaVZ

Even if "the Chinese won" as everyone is warning us, what would be the difference
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman believes people owning RAM is wasteful, and that it belongs in data centers instead. "From a global allocation perspective, actually, it’s quite terrible to have everyone have a bunch of the world’s limited supply of DRAM sitting in their own computer."

Powerlifting is similar to power metal in the sense that the difference between what you would imagine they'd be and what they actually are is quite immense

Everyone turned against Kendrick Lamar when they saw the lameness of the others cheering for him. Instant moment of mutual collective distancing from like 5 different fan bases

And then when Macklemore (pronounced "Mack L'Amour") won the Grammy for best rap artist, he publicly renounced his victory and declared that Kendrick should have won, for the record he did featuring a fake interview between himself and Tupac Shakur

Fascinating time to be a fan of rap music

I dunno, when you explain it that way the work takes on a certain poignance and truth.
Replying to @leoriogy
So she doesn't kill Poseidon who raped her She doesn't kill Athena who abandoned her and cursed her due to defining her temple She kills the boy who came to kill a literal monster that has been murdering innocents indiscriminately for years Whoever made this statue is so retarded they don't even know the story in question they are depicting

Immersing myself more and more into Paul Hindemith and his musical world. This guy should come into fashion once more as one of the major figures who gave a proper answer to the Second Viennese School with their hyper-intellectual nonsense. youtu.be/G5EoRR3-YRc?si=4iT1…

Maybe everyone would be calm and peaceful again if they went back to playing Muzak in grocery stores, hotels, and dentist waiting rooms instead of radio music from the 80s and 90s

Maybe Muzak was the glue holding modern western civilization together all along

Maybe Decoder (1984) was right and we shouldn't have let William S. Burroughs win, I dunno

I'm assuming that within a decade the state will completely take over all of this sort of moral auto-regulation and fully decide the standards for determining "harm," "misuse," etc.
We’ve trained Claude to flag potential misuse in conversations, a technique we call self-assessment. Right after it responds, Claude gives a preliminary safety assessment of the conversation. Since we began using self-assessment in June, it has surfaced misuse that our other safeguards weren’t designed to catch. Because Claude has already read the conversation, self-assessment is very efficient. And unlike classifiers, which target a discrete set of harms, it draws on Claude’s own judgment, so it gets more accurate as our models improve. Much of the late imperial Roman satire and doom writing focuses on the pervasive obsession with games of chance, even among the "aristocracy"
Gambling is an ancient Indo-European tradition attested among many Bronze Age cultures from the Greeks to the Aryans. It requires a bold and daring acceptance of fate, which is admirable. Of course, gambling addicts are pathetic and those who profit from the misery of others are hardly exemplary. I am sure many bookies are evil. But any decent society must allow gentlemen to enjoy risk, regardless of the consequences.
