Objects of high aspect ratio benefit from specially designed cameras to avoid perspective distortion. Daniel Lawrence Lu’s photos of San Francisco streetcars, like Adam Magyar’s earlier ones of NYC Subway trains, use line scan cameras, capturing 1000s of pixel columns/second.
A camera that only sees one column of pixels at a time turns out to be the perfect way to photograph a streetcar.
Daniel Lawrence Lu stood by the Muni tracks for three hours with a line scan camera, capturing about 10,000 one-pixel slices a second as each tram rolled past.
Since the vehicle paints itself onto the frame, there's no perspective at all. The trams come out flat and dead-on, like the elevation drawings an engineer would make, while the background smears into stripes. And people don't blur either.

Great to see an animated version of the dimension-busting Flatland photography by @aydinbuyuktas. It would be fantastic to try this in a navigation app.

最近たまに見かける「インセプション風の曲面マップ」、ナビアプリに実装されたら手前と遠くが同時に見渡せて意外と便利そう。

The map was from British Waterways Board’s Cruising Guide to the Llangollen Canal (1970). It presents the wiggly canal as a straight line, resulting in a clear and beautiful layout.
It was an honour to have a 1D map from my collection feature in an @underware talk last year at @ATypI Copenhagen. The video of the talk has just been published.

清明上河图 (Along the River During the Qingming Festival, 12th century), the painted scroll sometimes called China’s Mona Lisa, has been brought to life digitally before, but AI is taking it to another level 👏
Drop the “British Museum” text panel on the left to widen the scroll window. Everyone knows where it is.

One-dimensional maps!
Another super example of #1dmaps from @AaronKoelker
Here's another receipt printer #map; this time of the Boston Marathon and contained in an enduro route sheet holder. (Thanks Eric Seitz for the suggestion). The map includes distances, landmarks, uphill segments, and more.
I’d love it! I took a photo of one in its natural habitat in 2013, so they aged well. It features as part of my #1dmaps collection. RT and reply? Tough call but ok!

Wow! Now I understand everything.

UNFOLDING: this wonderful new leporello of Chicago by Ryan Chester. Reminds me of the similar London (2012) and Manhattan (2001) leporelli by @MatteoPericoli. Disappointing not to see a nod to Matteo in the blurb

Fantastic work, generating street profile views from point clouds. Brings to mind Caspar Philips’ Grachtenboek of Amsterdam (1768), Quadri’s Canal Grande (1831), John Tallis’s London views (1838), Ed Ruscha’s Sunset Strip (1966) and Jörg Dietrich’s PanoramaStreetline (now).
