Excellent pre Busdget read jam packed with stats for the Chancellor and govt ministers to mull over. Two stand out for me - first the big drop on consumer confidence in October underlining fragility and second the 117,000 drop on payrolled Jobs in retail & hospitality - the most highly taxed sectors of economy. Both underline that “do no harm” will not be enough and targeted incentives to reduce cost of doing business will be needed to Reverse NEETs crisis and driver growth in every postcode thetimes.com/business/econom…

If hospitality doesn't get its much needed VAT cut next week, I fail to see when we would. @andyburnham is at his strongest. Finding the short term cash for a cut would require decisions elsewhere, and if he can't make them now - he never will. This really is last chance saloon.

There’s no such thing as “business-friendly socialism”. Socialism is innately hostile to business and the people who create, operate and own businesses. That is why socialism has a 100% track record of impoverishing every country where it has ever been tried.
They are first steps, but in the budget Burnham and Healey are going to try to signal their distinct direction of travel. A bold budget this week will deliver the business-friendly socialism Britain badly needs observer.co.uk/news/national…

Of course we want to deliver the 100,000 jobs @UKHofficial has pledged. Of course we can. But hospitality had already lost an estimated 100,000 jobs following Labour’s October 2024 Budget. We’d be rebuilding employment we’ve already lost. If this Labour government thinks for one second that hospitality has the money sitting around to fund another 100,000 jobs without cutting VAT, it’s got another thing coming. Businesses are fighting to pay the staff they’ve still got. A press release doesn’t pay wages. I understand showing willing. We want to give young people opportunities. But UKHospitality’s response should have been clear: “Yes, we’ll deliver 100,000 jobs. Cut VAT in line with Europe and give us the means to do it.” You cannot keep taxing employment out of existence then expect applause for asking us to create it again. #Hospitality #VatinlinewithEurope

In Parliament @JohnGlenUK spoke about the cost of a holiday tax to domestic visitors. “People who can’t afford to go abroad will now be burdened with additional costs to have a few days away.” This tax will hit all overnight trips in England #StopTheHolidayTax

In Parliament @CatherineFookes has set out her support for #VATsTheProblem campaign. 10% is fair for hospitality and in line with the average rate of VAT in Europe. Add your voice to the campaign 👉 vatstheproblem.co.uk/ #VATsTheProblem

🚨 PANIC IN DOWNING STREET AS ANDY BURNHAM FORCED TO OPEN SECRET UAE FILES! Days after I exposed Burnham acting as an unpaid defense lawyer for Man City, the Prime Minister has officially hit the panic button haha. Faced with overwhelming public backlash, Burnham has surrendered and announced he will publish his private meeting logs with the club billionaire Emirati owners. He rushed onto a podcast desperately trying to get ahead of the scandal, claiming he only had one significant meeting back in 2021 and that his mind was on other things when he defended the club on national television. What an insulting, pathetic excuse from the man supposedly leading Great Britain. Burnham conveniently failed to mention that he personally chaired the authority meetings that handed 55 million pounds in taxpayer loans to Jersey property companies owned by Sheikh Mansour. He wants the public to believe football rules and foreign investments are totally separate, yet his local administration used public money to buy up land specifically for Abu Dhabi developers. The Prime Minister is only agreeing to publish these records because he was caught red handed using his political office to shield foreign oligarchs while taxing British workers into the dirt. I want every single unredacted diary entry, text message, and private meeting note released to the British public immediately without Whitehall censorship. Retweet this right now to demand total transparency before Downing Street scrubs the files. 🇬🇧🔥

In Parliament @cj_dinenage questioned the design of an uncapped holiday tax. “We normally tax things to stop people doing them, not to encourage them to do more.” An expansive and uncapped holiday tax will not cause growth but will cost jobs and deter visitors #StopTheHolidayTax

To get the economy going again they need to reduce national insurance back to what it was, reduce tax, reduce VAT on fuel. If people have more money in their pockets they spend more and government gets more in tax revenue and VAT from Corp tax.

This is the solution. The tax on hospitality is just too high. Higher than other countries, higher than the wider economy. It’s got so much worse in the past two years. It’s got worse again with the holiday tax. Just cut VAT. Www.vatstheproblem.co.uk

How about drilling in the North Sea for our own oil & gas?
I know people are worried about fuel prices. And I get it. You get to the pump, watch the numbers climb, and wonder why it's costing so much more than it used to.   The reality is that global events are pushing up costs, and families here at home are feeling the impact.   But I won't accept that there's nothing I can do to help.   That's why from today, you'll be able to see petrol and diesel prices on Google Maps, compare nearby stations and find the cheapest option before you fill up.   It's a small change, but if there's a practical way to help people keep more money in their pocket, I'll do it.

Hospitality is “already paying twice the amount of tax that a bank does,” @Allen_m_Simpson, our Chief Exec told @BBCRadio4. The hospitality sector already has one of the highest tax burdens in the UK and introducing holiday tax would further increase costs for both families and businesses.

This is actually taking the piss. Instead of doing something meaningful to help motorists like cutting fuel duty, the Prime Minister patronises British motorists by telling them to click on Google maps to find the cheapest local prices for diesel and petrol. Unbelievable.

I’m fed up with hearing Andy Burnham waffle about hope and how wonderful things might be after another election. Labour is in government NOW. Where are the tough decisions? Changing government and reducing the size of the state is critical, absolutely critical, to the health of our economy. You don’t create prosperity by growing government. You create it by allowing people and businesses to create wealth.
🚨"I'm sick and tired of hearing Andy Burnham waffle about how good things could be... He needs to damn well get on and tell us what he's going to do!" Tory MP Sir Iain Duncan Smith compares Andy Burnham to an overly optimistic "sage hermit". @JuliaHB1 | @MPIainDS
