I got to live every energy nerd’s dream and went on Shift Key to discuss my pet research area (the baroque political economy of California wildfire liability). Thanks so much for having me on @robinsonmeyer !! heatmap.news/podcast/shift-k…

i'll never forget the just-built municipal hotel in Xiamen where i was put up for some event in 2018. The floors and walls were all the same material somehow and the one window in my room was tiny and close to the ceiling like in a prison cell.
Interior architecture as a craft doesn't really exist in China, the interiors of many commercial buildings make zero sense w.r.t. human activity. You'll see hallways going to nowhere, courtyards doing fuck all, steps and escalators in the randomest places. Literal backrooms country.

CPUC commissioner gets philosophical at the end of this article on potential SF/PG&E breakup. For the efficiency-pilled among us, the answer to Reynolds' question is "yes, duh." But that answer may be less palatable coming from state politicians! politi.co/4Bl6MpR

I also continue to wonder if we should take it for granted the SF public sector could run a power system better than PG&E. Indeed, SMUD is well run; but LADWP is not. Of course the main advantage in breaking with PG&E is that we would no longer have to pay for wildfire mitigation/liability. But that is not one of Sen. Weiner's talking points!

To further synthesize replies to this: do they just not have loneliness epidemic/decline of third spaces discourse in the UK????
In my sample of fellas I spoke to at Progress con, average UK male had 10x better social skills than avg US male. Can anyone explain this? Selection effects?? Surely does not reflect true population average???

Not sure it’s social skills exactly, but IME Americans are really good at presentation of self to large groups, Brits are really good at presentation of self to small ones. I assume it’s a different high school culture or sth

Simple answer: Brits drink, and don’t take themselves too seriously. We also have a healthier attitude to learning how to socialise in school and at university. Partly because we drink, and don’t take ourselves too seriously.

If you write, your fingerprints are in the training data of the AI that replaces you. Your work lives on, unlike the work of weavers replaced by machines in the first Industrial Revolution At least that’s a nicer thought than “I guess the AI will slurp me up”

Americans are often much more confident, giving slick presentations. In Britain, it’s common to make friends by self-deprecation and mutual teasing. If you aren’t protecting your ego and it’s permissible to be slightly cheeky, it’s easier to make jokes & friends 😛

To synthesize the replies to this: it seems Beer is indeed a highly potent pro-social technology

I was so so pleased to have a packed house for this session with incredibly lively participant engagement!! Some people who couldn't make it have asked me how it went so I wrote up some of the ***key takeways***. THREAD:
If you're coming to Progress conference tomorrow, stop by my unconference session!! It's called IS PROGRESS COMPATIBLE WITH PROSOCIALITY? We're talking loneliness, birth rate decline, people taking their off leash dogs into the Safeway, etc. THREAD of discussion q's:

THE K-SHAPED LONELINESS ECONOMY? I urged participants to consider the class dimensions of the anti-social century. Data increasingly show the drop in family formation and party hosting is concentrated among the non-college educated. A participant who grew up working class speculated this is because if you are poorer, the expense involved in hosting a party does not outweigh the attractions of short form video.
