Another reason to be surprised at the impending stratospheric vortex breakdown: the ongoing super El Niño.
El Niño years WITHOUT a 10mb vortex slowdown in November were nearly all very robust El Niños, including the 4 strongest.
This super El Niño is not like the others.
The same El Niño can bring drought to Indonesia and heavy rain to Peru.

We're still 4-6wks away from ENSO peak, first distant signs of the Super El Niño's demise is here! Cooling, deep in the Indo-Pacific, has begun migrating eastward while the cooling has intensified, it'll still take several months to chew away the 2026-27 Super El Niño event.

This paper made me close my laptop and go for a walk.
Stanford proved that the simple act of walking generates 60% more creative ideas than sitting.
They ran four different experiments comparing people who were sitting inside, walking on a treadmill inside, walking outside, and being rolled outside in a wheelchair.
the outcome? walking drastically increases "divergent thinking" (your ability to generate novel, high-quality ideas).
and here is the craziest part..
it has absolutely nothing to do with "getting fresh air" or seeing nature. the researchers proved that the physical, mechanical act of walking, even staring at a blank wall on an indoor treadmill, is what actually hacks your brain and opens up the free flow of ideas.
when they rolled people outside in wheelchairs to test if the environment was the trigger.. the creativity boost didn't happen.
it is the physical movement that unlocks the brain.
and it gets better.. you don't even need to be walking while you work. the study found that participants experienced a massive "residual creative boost" even after they sat back down at their desks.
your brain essentially stays in god mode after the walk is over..
if you are stuck on a problem or an idea right now.. stop staring at your screen.
your lack of ideas isn't a thinking problem. it is a movement problem.
science says walking literally upgrades your hardware..

🐾 The world of wild cats is far more diverse than most people imagine! Beyond lions, tigers and leopards, some of the most fascinating felines are much smaller, with remarkable abilities that help them survive in very different environments.
🐱 Rusty-spotted Cat One of the smallest wild cats in the world, weighing just 1 to 1.6 kg as an adult. Despite its tiny size, it’s an agile and skilled hunter.
🏜️ Sand Cat Perfectly adapted to desert life, with thick fur protecting its paws against extreme temperatures and an incredible ability to survive with very little drinking water.
❄️ Pallas’s Cat Its incredibly thick coat helps it survive freezing temperatures across the mountains and grasslands of Central Asia.
🐟 Fishing Cat Unlike most felines, this species is strongly associated with water. Its powerful body and swimming abilities make it an excellent hunter of fish.
🐾 Black-footed Cat Africa’s smallest wild cat is also an exceptionally successful nocturnal hunter, capable of catching several small prey animals in a single night.
🌳 Marbled Cat An elusive forest feline with a remarkably long tail that helps it balance while moving through trees.
🦒 Serval With its long legs and enormous ears, the serval can detect prey hidden in tall grass and perform spectacular vertical jumps.
🐈 Caracal Recognisable by its distinctive black ear tufts, this powerful feline can leap into the air to catch birds in flight.

🌎 EL NIÑO 2026 VS. 1997: IT’S NOT JUST HOW STRONG, BUT WHERE!
We know this year’s El Niño is exceptionally strong. But there is something else that has caught my attention, and it may be important as we head toward winter.
The location of the unusually warm water could be just as interesting as the actual temperatures.
Take a look at these two ocean-height maps comparing October 1997 with October 2026.
🌡️ FIRST, THE NUMBERS
El Niño is measured using ocean temperature anomalies, or how much warmer the water is compared to average.
TWO REGIONS (marked on the globes) are particularly important:
🔸 Niño 3.4: The most commonly used region for measuring El Niño strength.
🔸 Niño 1+2: The easternmost region, just off the coast of South America.
Recent October 2026 weekly measurements show:
🔥 Niño 3.4: +3.3°C (+5.9°F)
🔥 Niño 1+2: +5.2°C (+9.4°F)
These are extraordinary anomalies, especially in the eastern Pacific.
The numbers are SST anomalies, while the accompanying maps show sea surface HEIGHT anomalies. The elevated ocean levels are associated with warmer water and changes in ocean circulation.
👀 🌎 NOW LOOK FARTHER NORTH!
‼️ This is the feature that really caught my attention.
Compare the two globes, especially the area west of Mexico and Baja California.
👉🏻Notice the extensive area of elevated sea levels extending farther north in 2026.
This feature is outside the traditional El Niño monitoring regions, but it could be relevant to the larger Pacific weather pattern.
🌀 REMEMBER THE EASTERN PACIFIC HURRICANES?
We’ve already experienced an unusually active eastern Pacific hurricane season.
Several tropical systems have affected Mexico, with tropical moisture reaching the southwestern United States.
Hurricane Polo was one example in September. It crossed Baja California, made another landfall in mainland Mexico, and helped transport tropical moisture into the Southwest.
This doesn’t mean the elevated ocean levels caused those storms. But the location of these ocean anomalies is something worth investigating alongside this season’s tropical activity.
🌧️ WHY THIS INTERESTS ME FOR WINTER
El Niño influences the tropical Pacific atmosphere, including where large clusters of thunderstorms develop.
That tropical convection can influence the jet stream thousands of miles away.
During many strong El Niño winters, the southern branch of the jet stream becomes more active, bringing Pacific storms across the southern United States.
But what if the strongest tropical convection develops farther east or north than during other major El Niño events?
Could that alter the position or strength of the southern storm track?
That is the question I’m exploring.
❄️ WHAT ABOUT SNOW IN MARYLAND?
A more active southern storm track can provide moisture for East Coast winter storms.
But moisture alone doesn’t produce snow.
We still need the right combination of cold air, storm timing, and atmospheric blocking.
That is why I’m also watching the polar vortex, the North Atlantic pattern, and other factors that can influence winter temperatures.
📌 MY TAKEAWAY
The extraordinary strength of this El Niño is getting plenty of attention.
But I’m particularly interested in WHERE the ocean anomalies are located and how the atmosphere responds.
The unusual feature farther north, near Mexico, adds another piece to the puzzle.
It doesn’t guarantee a particular winter outcome, but it gives us something important to investigate as I continue preparing my full Winter Outlook.
More to come!
❄️ Faith in the Flakes!

🌙 Guayaquil: esta noche, lluvia fuerte
De 18:00 a 06:00 se esperan ~21 mm en total: lluvia fuerte. Algunos modelos dan hasta ~45 mm.
🌧️ 18:00 a 00:00: ~11 mm
🌧️ 00:00 a 06:00: ~8 mm
