A statement on 20 fantastic years: “Sadly, my gamble to gain even more new seats for @WimbledonLabour in Tory and Lib Dem strongholds didn’t quite succeed. Therefore, although I remain Leader of @Merton_Council until its AGM on 25 May, sadly I am no longer a @UKLabour councillor.

After 20 years’ public service, including 16 in cabinet, 7 as Deputy Leader and 2 as Leader during a pandemic, I had already promised my family I would take a step back, but I am of course sad I will not see all my plans reach fruition until after I step down.

I pass on the leadership with Merton in good condition, after excellent election results, with a clear path to improving the borough further over the rest of this decade. I’ve loved being a Councillor and thank all residents and council staff for creating a wonderful community.”
