Fighter Jets Cannot Defend a Nation from Its Own Failed Governance #AbiyAhmed may celebrate the acquisition of sophisticated #Russian fighter jets and air-defense systems as a historic achievement. But an inventory of advanced military hardware is neither a measure of national security nor a substitute for peace, justice, political legitimacy, and sustainable development. #Ethiopia's greatest security challenge is not a shortage of fighter jets, tanks, or missiles. The principal multiplier of Ethiopia's deepening polycrisis remains Abiy Ahmed's own leadership failure and the ruling Prosperity Party's, in particular the dominant OPP pursuit of political dominance and unbridled greed to amass resources and power at the expense of of the overwhelming majority of the Ethiopian people. Consider the devastating record: protracted wars and armed conflicts across #Tigray, #Amhara, and #Oromia; ethnically targeted killings and persecution; grave human rights violations documented by international and Ethiopian human rights organizations; mass displacement; shrinking political and civic space; corruption and institutional decay; and the manipulation of ethnic and regional divisions for political advantage. From #Benishangul-Gumuz and #Gambella to #Southern Ethiopia and #Moyale, insecurity and intercommunal violence have further exposed the fragility of the country's political and institutional foundations. In part, stemming from regime's policies, by commission or omission. Meanwhile, Abiy's much-trumpeted “prosperity” narrative increasingly resembles a celebration of concrete monuments amid massive human suffering. His extravagant urban redevelopment and corridor projects stand in deeply disturbing contrast to the forced evictions, demolished homes, shattered livelihoods, and displacement of tens of thousands of vulnerable residents in Addis Ababa and other urban areas, including the Sheger metropolitan area. What kind of prosperity measures development by glittering buildings while disregarding the dignity, security, and livelihoods of ordinary citizens? Add to this the confrontational rhetoric, deteriorating relations, and dangerous geopolitical tensions involving neighboring countries, particularly #Eritrea, the S#udan, and the implications extend far beyond Ethiopia's borders. These are mutually reinforcing manifestations of a deeper crisis of governance. The government's pursuit of military superiority cannot resolve these contradictions. Indeed, without political accountability and genuine national reconciliation, greater military capacity risks becoming another instrument for perpetuating internal conflict rather than securing lasting peace. Abiy Ahmed may acquire the most sophisticated weapons Russia can supply. But he cannot purchase political legitimacy, manufacture national unity through coercion, or build sustainable prosperity through grandiose projects while the foundations of the nation are fractured. A government cannot credibly proclaim itself the guardian of national security while its own governance failures remain a major source of national insecurity. What Ethiopia needs are far more than advanced weapons: an end to destructive internal wars, justice and accountability, genuine democratic system, constitutionalism, the rule of law , equal citizenship, and a fundamental transformation in governance. The ultimate measure of a nation's strength is not how many weapons its rulers possess, but how securely, freely, peacefully, and with what dignity its people can live. That is the difference between militarizing the state and securing the nation.
