History does not necessarily repeat itself, but sometimes its echoes are unmistakable. Today, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has assembled his senior civilian leadership for military training in the name of building a new civilization. Meanwhile, civilians continue to suffer from war, displacement, poverty, and hunger. Is this the militarization of civilian government masquerading as political development? Ethiopia, once a beacon of African diplomacy and statesmanship under Emperor Haile Selassie, now presents the extraordinary spectacle of ministers in military fatigues, ambitious naval strategies despite being landlocked, and lavish development spectacles amid profound humanitarian suffering. Even Mengistu understood that diplomacy could not be replaced entirely by military posturing. The Prime Minister I have called the sick man of the Horn of Africa appears determined to turn statecraft into a permanent military exercise. Perhaps the next cabinet meeting will require combat boots and a parade commander. But Ethiopia needs functioning institutions, peace, bread, and responsible statesmanship, not another performance of militarized political theater.
