I wrote a chapter for @PavinKyoto's Routledge Handbook. I'm happy to be included among these amazing scholars. The book isn't the problem. Sadly, it's Pavin himself. And that's nothing special in a free society where people can be themselves.
I may disagree with #Pavin on several things, particularly his 'Royalist Thai Market Place FB group' which is a virtual cesspit of unsubstantiated slanders against the Thai monarchy & dehumanising speech, but banning a book he edited on Thai monarchy is something I can never endorse. It's immature of the Thai authorities to do so, not to mention futile in an era of social media & online communications. #ThailandNews #Thailand #LM #ThaiMonarchy #censorship
Unfortunately, @PravitR, his advocacy comes at a cost. Frankly, I'm less concerned for him or the international scholars than I am for the Thai contributors. We know that after what happened with @pwchambers3699 that there are risks.
It's up to all of us to act with an abundance of caution. In hindsight, perhaps Pavin's mockery of the Royal Thai Police announcement was a bit over the top. Again, it's nothing big most other places, but we study #Thailand.

I might be a little biased, but it's a great Handbook.
Thailand bans political handbook edited by exiled scholar
Thai police have banned the import of Routledge Handbook of Contemporary Thailand, Second Edition, edited by exiled Thai academic Pavin Chachavalpongpun, citing threats to national security and public order.
Anyone importing the book for distribution could face up to three years in prison or a 60,000-baht fine.
Pavin mocked the decision, arguing that banning books in the internet age would only boost publicity and sales. The 474-page handbook features 37 chapters contributed by 45 scholars.
