South Africa is the most unequal country in the world, yet somehow “academics” believe it is acceptable for poor South Africans, who only recently gained their democratic rights after decades of systematic oppression, dispossession and brutal violence under apartheid, to share their already limited resources with outsiders, some of whom harbour resentment towards the very communities they are settling in. How does that conversation ignore the historical and socioeconomic realities of this country?

Did you know that Jeff Masemola was the longest-serving political prisoner on Robben Island (surpassing Mandela's years specifically on the island). He was released on October 15, 1989. Nelson Mandela served a total of 27 years across Robben Island, Pollsmoor Prison, and Victor Verster Prison, before being released on February 11, 1990.

Ncumisa Selani killed her two boyfriends and 17-year-old son, burying them together in her backyard. In 2016, after learning she was HIV-positive, she blamed her Malawian boyfriend and persuaded her Zimbabwean boyfriend to help kill him. They buried him in her yard. In 2017, she and her son killed the Zimbabwean boyfriend, whom she said was abusive, and buried him on top of the first man. In 2018, she killed her son and buried him above the two men, reportedly because he used drugs and threatened to expose their secrets unless she gave him money.

Did you share the same sentiment about the MKP, when they were the biggest party in KZN in the last elections?

3. Denying Helen the position of mayor is legally permissible but would violate the substantive intent of our democracy. How can the biggest party be excluded? We should therefore try and avoid it if at all possible? So what are Helen’s options for coalition partners?
