Even recent political movements across the Tarai have focused almost exclusively on regional representation and identity—leaving the underlying feudal structure that keeps 40% of agricultural households landless virtually untouched. Why have decades of political upheaval—from 1960s land reforms to a Maoist insurgency and Madhesh uprisings—failed to dismantle landlordism in Nepal’s southern plains? “Rarely has the gap between global crises and credible solutions felt so wide.” A review essay by Maximillian Morch (@max_morch) revisits the life of U Thant, the Burmese diplomat who led the United Nations through the world’s gravest geopolitical crises, and asks what happened to the institution he once represented. From 1961 to 1971, U Thant served as Secretary-General during the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Congo Crisis, the India–Pakistan war, the Six-Day War and Vietnam. Thant Myint-U’s new book, 'Peacemaker', serves as a portrait not only of a largely forgotten global diplomat but also of the United Nations itself. It examines how a formally neutral institution sought to influence events, shape political outcomes and exercise diplomatic authority at the height of Cold War superpower rivalry. “At a moment when the UN appears increasingly marginal – unable to resolve or even much influence the defining crises of our age – the book feels especially timely.” himalmag.com/burmese-diploma…

This framing of Bagram is inane. Bagram held a military prison where scores of Afghans were held without charge, many tortured, some even killed. What is the point of trying to recapture this "sprawling symbol of American power" when it was utilized to be cruel to the population?

The Government is doing its best at the moment to imply it has no problem with the ethnonationalism now rearing its ugly head. And I don't understand why. 1/5

The recognition of refugee work rights is a historic step forward after 41 years of confinement to camps, but it’s only one part of a much broader process. The journey toward inclusive, whole-of-community solutions must continue.
TBC welcomes Thailand’s historic move to grant refugee work rights, but continued support is vital to ensure no refugee is left behind.

According to the Watson School of International and Public Affairs in Rhode Island, more journalists have been killed in Gaza than in both world wars, the Vietnam war, the wars in Yugoslavia and the war in Afghanistan combined.

Bhutan’s new Mindfulness City is hailed as sustainable & values-based—but built on land once home to Lhotshampa refugees expelled in the 1990s. I speak on the State of Southasia podcast (@Himalistan) about what this project erases. lnkd.in/gX-QRpzF

The IDF dropped a 500lb bomb into a cafe in Gaza on Monday. We saw & identified fragments. They had conducted "aerial surveillance" so knew it was crowded with civilians. They had other precise munitions available. Up to 40 died, more injured. My report: theguardian.com/world/2025/j…

This is the story of Miriam - who died a day before she was approved medical evacuation. She was one of 4,000 children who the WHO says are in urgent need of medical care that is not available inside Gaza. Warning: this report contains distressing images.
