😢 Eight short years ago today the late Scottish #rugby legend Doddie Weir talked to @amolrajan and @MissAlexjones on @BBCTheOneShow about living with motor neuron disease. Bless you for your enduring legacy of hope, your phenomenal @MNDoddie5 Foundation, big man, we miss you... #MND #MoreNeedsDoing

Back in London for MND biomarkers research participation. Hybrid journey on the motorbike to Oxford, then a train in (rather than cramming in a day return from Chester).

Buses, trains, bicycles, cars, pedestrians - but no obvious secure motorbike parking spots at Oxford Parkway :-(

This paper answers why confident idiots run the world. Cornell University published a psychological paper that explains every terrible boss, every loud influencer, and every broken corporate hierarchy. It’s called “Unskilled and Unaware of It.” they tested participants across logic, grammar, and humor to measure the gap between actual performance and self-perception. And the results are wild. participants scoring in the bottom 12th percentile consistently believed they were operating in the 62nd percentile. they were not lying. they were literally incapable of recognizing their own incompetence. the paper revealed a brutal paradox: the exact skills required to master a domain are the exact same skills required to accurately evaluate your own competence in that domain. if you lack the skill, you inherently lack the cognitive capacity to realize you are failing. this creates a dangerous systemic loop. the incompetent are blessed with absolute, blinding certainty. their brain protects them from their own ignorance, allowing them to speak first, demand authority, and never second-guess their decisions. meanwhile, the actual experts suffer the exact inverse. top performers in the study consistently underestimated their rank. because a task was easy for them, they falsely assumed it was easy for everyone else. they hesitate. they obsess over nuance. they assume they have nothing unique to add. we are biologically wired to confuse confidence with competence. the loudest person in the room gets promoted, gets funded, and gets the microphone, not because they know what they are doing, but because they are physically incapable of seeing what they don't. the only defense mechanism is building systems that stop rewarding absolute certainty and start demanding proof of work.

Floating bus stops are controversial for bringing various forms of transport, people, and accessibility into a single space - even more so adding a Railway Station too. Anyone familiar with this 'pinch point' in Shrewsbury would have had concerns: bordercountiesadvertizer.co.…

Understanding the science: bit.ly/3ZMEbZ9 ALS damages motor neurons that control muscle movement, leading to progressive weakness over time. Research continues to explore why this happens and how to slow it. #ALS #ALSResearch #Neuroscience #ALSAwareness #RareDisease #Bionews #ALSNewsToday

More London MND neuro stuff - a health care clinic review last month already getting local secondary referrals sorted. Back for research blood tests in a couple of weeks. I use my bike (medical reviewed licence) for the 200 mile trip and a cheap overnight in Oxf or Wilts.

(Not sure how many folk in the UK still get out on a bike with Motor Neurone Disease, but combined with physiotherapy massage, it reinforces my proprioception / balance / cramps and bizarrely more comfy than sat a modern car)

Together with @NeuroAlliance, we’re calling on the Government to commit to a national plan for neurological conditions by introducing a Modern Service Framework for neurological conditions. Together, we can improve access to services, reduce emergency admissions, and reduce health complications. Add your voice and sign the open letter now: campaigns.mssociety.org.uk/p…

In just 4 weeks I'll be in Warwick, a town with no shortage of ancient buildings! I'm there for Warwick Words Festival, the very first event on The Buildings Archaeologist tour. As its pre-release, we're sneaking in advance copies of the book! More info: warwickwords.co.uk/index.php…
