Twelve years ago today, Corporal Nathan Cirillo was killed while standing sentry at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Several others were injured.
Two days earlier, in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Québec, Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent was killed in a separate attack.
The attacks of October 2014 left a lasting mark on our country, but they did not change who we are.

On Sunday, October 18, 2026, the #LACoFD and @LACoFireMuseum held a Flag Ceremony at FS 127 for our dear friend Randolph ‘Randy’ Mantooth who passed away on July 9, 2026.
Famous for playing Johnny Gage on Emergency!, Randy brought Squad 51 into millions of homes. His television seriespopularized the modern paramedic and EMS systems we rely on today.
Randy was also a fierce advocate for firefighter health and safety, representing both the IAFF and the IAFC, and speaking at safety conferences nationwide.
Randy was a faithful supporter of our Department and the Los Angeles County Fire Museum.
He is greatly missed but his legacy will forever live on in our hearts and in the lifesaving programs he championed.

This is Chris Manson, an ordinary American who has done something extraordinary for Ukraine.
Chris is not a billionaire. He is not a politician. He is not a celebrity. He is a former firefighter who works in healthcare.
In 2022, his 7-year-old daughter Lily asked him a simple question: “Daddy, can we do something to help Ukraine?”
He could have told her that Ukraine was thousands of miles away. That there was little they could do. That it was someone else’s problem.
Instead, he decided to act.
In March 2022, Chris founded US Ambulances for Ukraine. On March 29, the first ambulance was on its way to Ukraine.
What started with one ambulance became something extraordinary.
125 ambulances, fire trucks, and rescue vehicles have now been sent to Ukraine.
These vehicles are saving lives. They are helping Ukrainian soldiers, doctors, firefighters, and rescue workers. They are evacuating the wounded and bringing help to people whose lives have been shattered by russia’s war.
One little girl asked her father a question. And because he decided to act, countless Ukrainians have received help when they needed it most.
Chris has no intention of stopping. He plans to continue helping Ukraine for as long as necessary.
There are people who have billions of dollars, enormous political power, and millions of followers. And then there are people like Chris Manson, who simply see suffering and decide to do something about it.
You don’t need to be rich or powerful to make a difference. You just need to care enough to act.
Thank you, Chris Manson.
Thank you for showing what true American generosity looks like.
Ukraine will never forget your kindness.

It's embarrassing to admit that I grew up with Adam West Batman reruns in the 1980s and as a kid thought the show was funny but embarrassing & corny. Now I find it completely delightful & realize the writers knew exactly what they were doing.

Had this man not found the courage to fight back after being repeatedly attacked with an axe capable of cutting through metal—while bleeding profusely—and had the presence mind to trigger the hijack/emergency code, initiate the emergency response and open the cockpit door to allow passengers to assist him, the aircraft’s subsequent dive could have had catastrophic consequences.
Had that aircraft not been recovered, the geopolitical consequences for the Middle East could have been profound and potentially irreversible.
Sometimes history turns on the courage, resilience and presence of mind of one person.
Yes. One Indian man.

I could like this a million times...
A pizza shop owner sees a homeless woman digging through his garbage for food.
He brings her inside, heats up a slice and gives her water.
Then he puts up a sign: If you’re homeless and hungry, come in. I’ll feed you.
No judgment, just humanity at its finest. ❤️

This visit broke my heart.
I visited an elderly man with a free food parcel he had requested. When I arrived, he asked, “Can you talk to me for five minutes, or do you have to go?”
I told him I could stay.
He spoke about his life, grieving his late wife and losing his only child to addiction. I stayed for an hour and listened.
As I left, he said, “Thank you for listening. It’s been a long time since anyone listened to me, Tasha.” I’m sure he meant me. Either way, he went back into his home smiling.
With his permission, I’ve passed his details to a befriending service.
I learnt a long time ago that a food bank is about more than food.
It’s about connection, being heard and being seen.
I hope I made his day.
I know he made mine. #foodbank

A message posted by the wife of Constable Jeff Smith who was shot protecting the Sons of Jacob synagogue.
Hello, world.
I don’t know where to begin.
My words aren’t strong or steady yet, but I knew I needed to find them. I needed to use my voice for my dear Jeff, until he is able to use his.
From the deepest part of my heart and soul, thank you.
Thank you to this good and kind world that has surrounded Jeff and our family with more love, compassion, generosity and selflessness than I could ever put into words.
I cannot begin to express what the outpouring of love and support has meant to us. I know there are things happening every day that I don’t even know about yet. Messages being sent. Prayers being said. People checking in. Hands reaching out.
And I know that my gratitude will never be enough.
I am witnessing real-life miracles.
And so many of them have happened through human hands.
The life-saving hands of paramedics and police. The hands of an angel neurosurgeon. The steady, capable hands of trauma teams, doctors, nurses, RTs, PSWs and so many others whose names we may never know, but whose kindness and skill we will carry with us forever.
The helping hands of neighbours, friends, community members and volunteers.
And then there are the hands that held me and my sweet girls when we were living through the scariest and darkest day of our lives.
Today, I held Jeff’s hand.
And I thought about all of those hands.
All of the people who have carried him, cared for him, prayed for him, fought for him and held us up when we didn’t know how we were going to stand.
I will never forget any of it.
I also want to send my love and prayers to the Jewish community, and to every scared soul who was there on Sunday night. Please know that your love, your prayers and your support have reached us. We are deeply grateful. We love you, we see you, we pray for you.
So I am asking for one thing.
Keep it coming.
Prayer. Hope. Faith. Love. Whatever you have to give, please keep giving it. We will take every bit of it we can get.
Jeff has a very long, difficult road ahead.
But he is not walking it alone.
He has an army of love behind him.
And I know Jeff.
He is the best man I know.
He loves his family with his whole heart. He cares deeply. He gives freely. He shows up. He is a man of integrity. He is my safest place.
And right now, he is fighting.
So we will fight with him.
Thank you for loving him.
Thank you for believing in him.
Thank you for honouring him.
Thank you for holding our family up.
Our hero.
Your hero.
💙🖤
With heartfelt gratitude,
Ashley
