Ukrainian veteran and documentary filmmaker Helena Maksyom, on stage in Berlin, where her feature about her years as a soldier on the front line received a standing ovation at the closing of the Ukrainian Film Festival. Both screenings in Berlin played to a full house. It was moving to be there and feel that reaction from the room, and to meet the people who hold up the Ukrainian support community in the city. They are selfless and dedicated. Some have put themselves in real danger to get aid to the units they stand behind. A special thank you to my new friend @mi_stad for the conversations and the ideas. The festival put our fundraiser on the screens and shared the QR code with the audience, and the people in that room answered with real generosity. Thanks to them we pushed well past where we were when I arrived in Berlin. The film is coming to select German cinemas soon and will be on ZDF early next year. More coming soon. So far your support has paid for car repairs and special equipment for their vehicles, and we will soon be able to get them a couple of EcoFlow power stations. What they need next are encrypted radios, which keep the unit safe by stopping the enemy from intercepting their communications. If the momentum holds, we also want to help them get another vehicle. These are terrible times for Ukraine, and I understand how people can lose hope. But as Helena says: "We don't have the luxury of being depressed, because if we truly fall into it, we are gone."
