1/2 Connections has sent down a rabbit hole this morning. The English horn (SPOILER: Neither English nor a horn) known over here as the cor anglais, is a larger, lower toned oboe, with a bend in it and a bulb shaped bottom end 🧵

Thought to resemble angels’ horns in medieval paintings it got the name Angelic Horn. The word for angelic in German - engellisches - also means English (Reminds me of the story of Pope Gregory and the Angles). Am now listening to Sibelius’s magical Swan of Tuonela featuring it
