INCONEL IS GOD'S METAL
According to ULA the stretched Centaur V to be used on Artemis will switch from stainless steel to Inconel 718. newsroom.ulalaunch.com/relea…

It's difficult to describe how difficult this was for them before, and how easy the solution was.
NASA discovering they also can just do things is adorable. Yes sweetie you can in fact machine in house what you need (new redesigned quick disconnect and spacer) instead of fattening one of your cost plus contractor ain't that great? (I'm genuinely happy for such progress)

Most of the US producing economy is like this btw.

Undersung: Centaur V-X was chosen over EUS because while they might have had one EUS soon, the Centaur V production line already existed.

Interesting risk buy down by only departing two astronauts.
Replying to @NASAArtemis
While Orion is docked with Starship, Starship will perform a trans-lunar injection burn to bring the connected spacecraft to lunar orbit. Starship will bring two astronauts to the lunar surface for several days before delivering them back to Orion for the ride back to Earth.

It occurs to me that this might be a function of spacesuit availability.

Across from the tiki bar.
Has anyone figured out where in HLS this is?

Centaur is the GOAT.
also so funny that its a giant inconel centaur and still below the cost of EUS lmfao

They're the best to ever do it.
Jared and Amit teaming up to give consecutive motivational speeches before Jeremy lets us know what’s going on lol

SLS Block 1 was half a rocket. Good riddance.
Well that settles it, SLS Block 1 seems to be retired as Artemis III is using a spacer instead of the ICPS (arguably a Block 0) and NASA is planning to start centaur modifications to ML-1 in Q3 2027. RIP SLS Block 1, you were beautiful while you lasted….

Wild that people are still quoting over a dozen launches after today.
Just picking a round number of 20 launches for this and ~12 launches for uncrewed demo landing. 2 launches for refill test, and Artemis 3. That’s 35 Artemis launches for Starship to theoretically complete by end of 2028. (Actually they want H1 of 2028). That’s more than 1 launch per month average starting now. And I’m not even including Flight 15. Will be hard.

If you are curious about this I did a thread on why
2 days of tests and entering with Blue Moon. 2 hours of test with Starship. Mostly about characterizing docking and pushing Orion.

There are a whole bunch of reasons SpaceX won't fly an HLS on Artemis III. I might as well enumerate them once and for all.

NASA machine shop techs being allowed to actually make shit again instead of worrying about making a cost+ contractor look bad

No it means they can launch a lot and topping off is cheap and easy and gives them a much easier schedule.
The NASA slide for Starship Artemis 4 shows that Starship HLS requires an additional refill in a higher orbit. Very disappointing and confusing. To me this has to mean Starship HLS is >175 tons dry.

By the way this graphic from NASA is misleading, this launch profile does NOT use New Glenn 7x2 as shown. NASA stated New Glenn 9x4 would launch the 3 transfer stages and Blue Moon Mk2. Blue currently has a NET date of late 2027 for 9x4, this will obviously slip and they will need to prove out the launcher to safely launch critical hardware. If that NET date slips to early 2028, that means the first flight of New Glenn 9x4 would be directly at the planned Artemis IV date.

It’s wild hearing the words “depot” coming out of the mouths of NASA officials.

What I find interesting is that no one has identified which nose cone this is yet. The folks saying we could see every nosecone at Starbase might be wrong.
By the way this is clearly old footage of HLS-Cabin 1 SpaceX is further ahead on it than what we have seen here and it should be completed very soon probably next month?
