A wealth tax is possible, but the new government leadership must have the drive to implement it.
The top 50 richest families in the UK now hold more wealth than half of the population, (34 million people). In 2024, the two richest UK billionaires held more wealth between them than all the billionaires in the 1990 rich list COMBINED.
Meanwhile, public services are crumbling and wealth inequality widens.
It’s time for real change.

Confronting the lies about our ‘unaffordable’ welfare budget
"As a proportion of GDP the total welfare bill is lower than it was 15 years ago. The claim that it is spiralling out of control is mythmaking,"

Foreign nationals would be excluded from most benefits under a Reform UK government, the party has said.
The ban, part of a proposed overhaul of Britain's benefits system, would include European Union (EU) nationals with settled status in the UK.
It would require renegotiating the UK's Brexit deal with the EU, potentially meaning that British expatriates living in the EU could lose equivalent rights.

Absolutely astonishing.
Rayner appears to have taken a big payment from an anti-rent control lobby group representing estate agents, and then gone on live national television to rule out rent controls.
Is she going to have to resign? (Again)?
NEW: Housing Secretary @AngelaRayner took £20,000 in speakers fees from an anti-rent control lobbying group just weeks before ruling out a rent freeze in what campaigners from @LDNRentersUnion are calling a 'clear conflict of interest'

In the 1980s, tenants paid 10% of their income to landlords.
Today it’s 39% nationally, 57% in London, up to 74% in some boroughs, and 45% in Andy Burnham’s Manchester.
As Prime Minister he’s just said no to rent controls. He chose landlords over renters. My latest 👇🏾

Much of what is said about economics is little better than gaslighting....
I used AI tools when writing this post, including a spell checker. I also used about 50 years of experience observing, studying, and writing about these issues. The infographic drawing was the smallest part of all that, and I had no budget to do it any other way.

Labour MPs warn Andy Burnham he’ll lose their support if he makes “punitive” welfare cuts. It’s the first warning to the new PM from the party’s left
After Burnham’s comments about cutting the welfare bill on Monday, one MP says he has to be careful not to repeat Keir Starmer’s mistake of focusing on savings rather than fairness. Without proper engagement with MPs he risks having cuts blocked by the party, they say
Another Labour MP, Kim Johnson, says she’s concerned the appointment of John Healey as chancellor “signals a return to a ‘warfare, not welfare’ approach”
“If the new leadership believes it can revive the failed politics of welfare cuts instead of asking the wealthiest to pay their fair share, it will be repeating not only Keir Starmer’s mistakes but fourteen years of Tory austerity,” Johnson said. “If the first instinct of a new leadership is to target disabled people and low-income families rather than challenge the wealth and inequality at the top of society, then nothing has been learned”
John McDonnell says welfare reform “must be based upon a strategy of providing positive support to people rather than punitive sanction”

Labour MPs were elected to deliver change, not cuts.
I will stand with disabled people, against any further cuts and restrictions to their benefits.

Private rents are part of the cost of living crisis. For some people, rent accounts for 50% of their income.
As long as we don’t have enough affordable housing, rent controls should be seriously considered as a solution.

By ruling out rent controls, this new Labour Government are already demonstrating that they have no interests in supporting struggling people in this country - but will always back the interests of the powerful and wealthy. – at Hothfield, England
