When I taught math, sometimes the most "teaching" that I did was to hand a kid a "slice" of paper and/or a pencil. They'd be trying to do math in their heads, and I'd remind them to scribble, and they'd get more math right.
What else is like this?
Best election week worksheet ever: give students an AI tool and the entire ballot, then have them decide and defend every vote. #sschat
This is how I'm doing my own ballot this year. I'm learning way more about each prop and candidate than I ever did from the mailer.
"Everyone's a student. Everyone's a teacher." That sign at @khanlabschool summed up their AI in Education Summit. A few things from the day 🧵
Gave the room 21 of my 50 minutes to talk and build with each other. Both felt too short, which feels like the right problem to have.
The student panel was clear: let us do the thinking, question us out loud, and give us room to come up with ideas first. Our recap: sideby.ai/blog/khan-lab-scho…
Tweeting over on LinkedIn. Besides teachers (we already know), who does way more than their title says? #sidebysunday linkedin.com/pulse/go-places…
Saturday at @khanlabschool's AI in Ed Summit: "No Hesitation." We name the real reasons educators hold back on AI, then set them aside and ski the fall line. Sat 10/24, 1 PM, Mountain View. Around through Sunday if you want to connect. links.kls.org/aied-expo
Temporal hypofrontalility
“A 2022 review of nearly 40 studies compared guided play to direct instruction – when a teacher delivers clearly defined, planned lessons in a prescribed manner – in children up to 8 years old.
It found that guided play has a more significant positive impact than direct instruction on early math skills, shape knowledge, and being able to switch from one task to another.
I still think the biggest thing AI could do for teachers is show them what students know, and want to know, right now. Everything else is downstream of that.
Resistance to AI in schools usually isn't about the tool. Sometimes it's fear, sometimes it's values, sometimes it's just bandwidth. Each one needs a different first conversation.
Honest question for coordinators: when your district rolls out something big, like CBE grading, an AI policy, or a new math adoption, where do the real conversations about it happen? Staff meeting, hallway, or nowhere?
Most AI PD for teachers is still sit-and-get. What actually moves people is a real conversation with a colleague who's half a step ahead. That's the bet we're making with sideby.
Directors point the direction. Coordinators get the whole system from here to there, and most of that job is conversation. If you coordinate for a district or region, what are you coordinating towards this year?
And with each other, hopefully. @sideby

I wish there were an approximate quote button on my keyboard. Like the squigly equals sign, but up high and at an angle, and which means so-and-so approximately said something.
