Four photographs. Four different contexts. One important reminder. Religion is woven into everyday human life.
I have developed a habit when visiting museums. I look for religion, even in exhibitions that do not have religion as their subject.
During my visit to the recently opened National Geographic Museum of Exploration in Washington, DC, I noticed religion appearing throughout the museum in ways that were both visible and embedded in everyday life.
These photographs show women traveling for maternal care in Afghanistan, religious novices playing together in Peru, Catholics participating in a public procession in the Philippines, and Buddhist monks adapting their practices during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Together, they offer examples of lived religion. Religion is not limited to doctrines, sacred texts, formal ceremonies, or houses of worship. It is connected to health, gender, geography, community, joy, hardship, tradition, and change.
Museums can help us see these connections and better understand religion as part of the broader human experience.
What do we miss when we overlook religion in the stories museums tell?

Catherines active listening skills are second to none, look how she focuses on what the other person is saying, reflecting understanding by micro nods and eye contact, she is actively processing a reply to the information being given, and waits for an opportune moment before replying... perfect.👌
