The best thing I've done in months is hop on my fatbike and ride until I got tired the other night. Now that's livin'. Thanks @drdagly for the inspiration.

This nails so many issues I've had when trying to warp speed my dev with AI.

2024: "AI is going to replace all software engineers in a year." 2026: The entire codebase is hallucinating and nobody knows where the core logic ends and the AI spaghetti begins. We literally just automated the creation of legacy tech debt.

May 12 Hantavirus Update: Read quickly and then go live your lives. Risk very low; CDC/UNMC/Emory U are on this. -11 cases, 3 deaths: Index case, his wife, one other -One new PCR+ Spanish case overnight; early symptoms -History of previous outbreaks indicates PCR+ occurs 5-15 days before symptoms -The situation remains within the window of the first generation of human-to-human transmission from the Index Case -That window closes about May 19th, when new cases need to begin to be attributed to a Gen 2 H-to-H transmission, if they occur -The four sequenced cases are nested within prior cases from Argentina; nothing remarkable about their genomes to predict abherent behavior -The 4 sequences are identical, indicating a single source, the Index Case, and not consistent with multiple rodent-to-human cases, as suggested by some -UNMC National Quarantine Center is responsible for observation of 18 non-symptomatic exposees -The Center personnel train quarterly for just this event -We have this National Center based, in part, on the visionary leadership of Senator @BenSasse, Senators Fischer & Ricketts, Congressmen Flood, Bacon, and Smith, and Nebraska Governor Pillen. -Thank you on behalf of the American people. -Outbreak likelihood remains extremely low and unchanged from yesterday

Epuyén outbreak was NOT self-limited. Even though it was in a remote rural tiny town, it kept spreading. After four turns of human-to-human transmission, including to people merely in the same room, the authorities imposed a strict quarantine for a whole month. Then it ended.
Andes virus is serious, but “can spread person-to-person” ≠ “pandemic-capable.” Even the largest outbreak (Epuyén) was self-limited. NEJM investigators noted some “possible inhalation” exposures—but that’s nuance, not evidence of measles-like spread. nytimes.com/2026/05/12/opini…
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
The Epuyén outbreak was not self-limited but controlled by public health interventions including case isolation, enforced 40-day self-quarantine for contacts with N95 use, and bans on mass gatherings. The reproduction number only fell below 1 after these measures. nejm.org/doi/full/10.10… nejm.org/doi/suppl/10.1…

Didn't even know you could 'fly into Pitcairn' lol. If you're gonna develop a nasty virus that's one place it's not exactly gonna spread far and wide (population under 50).
Radio New Zealand reports an American citizen who is a “hantavirus contact case” flew from San Francisco to Tahiti to remote Pitcairn Island on Thursday without telling anyone and has now been quarantined there after authorities became aware she arrived.

College applications: what an experience to go through, as a parent. I used to hear people go on and on about what misery that is, and I thought "how bad can it be?" Pretty bad! I'm still feeling shell shocked, and we had a happy ending. Most don't. Not with the ivy/subivy.

The one satisfying thing about our process is that my kid did get into the school that was probably the best fit. I feel both grateful and humble that they were able to see that. It could have easily gone the other way.

Overall I am left far more empathetic to parents who have talked about what a hard thing it is to go through.

Every time LLM tries to use port 8000 instead of 8001, which we always use [and is a mistake I see nearly every day], I realize THAT is how easy it is for them to get a variable name wrong. Just 1 char off. Just, that, easy.

When you have to ask an LLM agent "are you joking?" you know that at least for now, humans *might* still be needed.

LLMs in vscode are constantly adding hacky overrides instead of actually fixing functionality. And by the time you figure out that is what they've done, there are so many loc that refactoring would nearly kill you. And the hacks mostly work. Still, not great.

Wow - tough CSS vars issue that Opus 4.5, Sonnet, Gem 3, and Codex 5.2 could not solve.... guess who came in and got it done in 10 minutes? Grok. (!) @ibab

Just ordered autistic Barbie. I read some fully verbal, autistic, woman complaining about how terrible these are. That's NUTS. For nonverbal kids like my vibrant daughter - this Barbie is the coolest thing ever. It has a "talker" in her hand, just like my daughter does.

I’m starting to develop bad FOMO if my agents aren’t running 24x7. It feels like the opportunity cost is extreme. It’s like you have a team of 100 engineers just sitting there because you haven’t given them work to do. Not a great feeling actually. And I’m feeling this even after shipping a feature on a Saturday. Anyone else experiencing this?
