Here are my thoughts:
I think there has to be some limit on international players.
People say “but it’s fair because the international players are better.”
Sure, they are. No arguments. These are third and fourth rate American talents they’re competing against.
However, I don’t think the answer is to abandon the third and fourth rate American talents.
If we shrink the pool of American talents with the chance to be successful pros sometime in the future, we will get worse. It’s inevitable.
You might say who cares, but keep in mind that Matt Turner was a third or fourth rate talent. So was Max Aarfsten. So was Patrick Agyemang. So was Matt Freese. So was Chris Wondolowski. Could keep going. There have been plenty of unheralded American college soccer recruits who turned into good pros who contributed to the USMNT.
In fact, I think prior pedigree goes out the window once these kids get to college. College soccer is not pro soccer. It’s not academy soccer. The motivations are different. The style is different. Who succeeds in a pro setup is not who succeeds in a college setup. There’s some overlap, but it’s really not as much as you’d expect. I routinely think players are top recruits and then they don’t get regular playing time until they’re juniors. I also routinely think players were very average pro prospects, they’re top college soccer players, and then they come back to a pro setup and are once again very average.
If college soccer is going to exist (believe me, it will only get bigger now with the full season), we can’t abandon the value of it for American players. Maybe you don’t personally care about American player development if it’s not a Sullivan or Mehmeti, but ultimately the development of the third and fourth rate American talents does matter and there has to be a limit of how many international players this American soccer development platform is going to take away from American talents.
No, it doesn’t tangibly matter 1v1. You probably aren’t taking a spot away from a future USMNT player by having 26 internationals and 1 American on this team, but overall the big increase (an increase that is becoming out of control) is shrinking the true opportunities third and fourth rate American talents have to develop their games. We can’t abandon these talents at 18-22 years old. We are limiting our senior team player pool to do so, whether you tangibly can feel that impact or not. It’s proven out over time that it will.
The Missouri State coach says he tries to recruit locally first.
End result: 26 internationals, 1 American.
The lone American had to spend a year in Spain just to make the team.
That’s the new cost of entry for 🇺🇸 athletes.

People are calling this an incredible story… and it is.
But the fact he was still playing high school football at 17 and could now move for more than 100m just three years later is a pretty damning indictment of the US youth development system.
Yan Diomande has one of the craziest soccer stories that you’ll ever see.
◽ In 2023, he was still playing high school soccer in Florida at Yulee High School and DME Academy after moving from Ivory Coast.
◽ That same year, playing for AS Frenzi, he won the UPSL national championship and even earned a $1,000 check as the playoff's top scorer.
◽ In November 2024, he signed with Leganés B.
◽ Just four months later, he made his La Liga debut for Leganés against Real Madrid.
◽ After impressing in just 10 La Liga appearances, RB Leipzig signed him in a deal worth around $23 million.
◽ At the 2026 World Cup, he became the youngest player ever to represent Ivory Coast at the tournament and helped the nation reach the knockout stage for the first time.
◽ Now, just three years after playing high school soccer in Florida, he's set to join Real Madrid in a deal worth more than €100 million.
Incredible. 😳👏

*conservative trying to think of a nightmare scenario* what, you want the government to fund after-school programs?

The fact that we just spent maybe close to $200 billion on an utterly stupid and pointless war and a certain species of American still finds the idea of the govt subsidizing youth soccer unthinkable is basically the insoluble problem here
My debut World Cup… it hurts to wait 4 years to compete at the highest level our sport has to offer. I want to say sorry to our fans it was not good enough when it mattered most and we let you down
Soccer in America will only become bigger the belief, the talent, and the passion is continually growing and I know the best days are in front of us, the future belongs to those who never stop believing, this moment will fuel us. We will be back
Why not us?
For the nation. For the flag.

Thierry and Zlatan saying they wouldn't have become soccer players because of the costs of the American youth system, then seeing Lalas say it's a great system because it makes a lot of money for some people really sums it all up nicely
