McKelvie was kept on as Deputy Mayor as a way to maintain the peace following Tory's shameful departure from council. McKelvie and Bradford were being lobbied by PortsToronto and Nieuport Aviation (the airport operator & terminal owner) re the Toronto Island Airport. #TOpoli
Federal Liberal MP Jennifer McKelvie was the deputy mayor of Toronto under Olivia Chow. After working closely with Chow, McKelvie is endorsing Brad Bradford. Tells you something.

If this person had taken a moment to read the memorial, she'd have known that Karolina Huebner-Makurat's name does not appear it. This is a memorial by people who use drugs, for people who use drugs. rabble.ca/human-rights/drug-… There is a local parkette named for Ms Huebner-Makurat
On my way home I walked past the memorial for Karolina Huebner-Makurat a mother of two young children who was shot and killed by a stray bullet on July 7, 2023, outside the South Riverdale Community Health Centre. She was killed by gunfire during an altercation involving drug dealers outside a supervised consumption site. At the Ward 14 candidate debate tonight to discuss the drug and homeless crisis, candidate SUSAN CHAPPELLE said she thought it was too bad the Safe Injection Sites were closed because of one death. Susan is not a person who should be sitting on City Council.

The Bradford bros kicking off the weekend before the election throwing unhinged tantrums about gay people, and dads who take their kids for walks, is definitely an interesting choice

Brian, Jennifer McKelvie was appointed deputy mayor by John Tory in 2022, and she endorsed Ana Bailão against Chow in 2023. She's now endorsing Bradford, a colleague she's worked with since 2018. You're right. It tells us something. Just perhaps not what you were hoping.

Noah. I think we should both take the win here: because I agree with every word in this one specific tweet. 😉 I do want also to thank you: this has been spirited and respectful, two things that are in short supply often on this platform.
Miranda, Ben voluntarily spent his Sunday debating me on a public platform. I'm not sure how you got from two adults disagreeing on Twitter to me running compulsory political re-education seminars.

Ben, your right to free speech protects your ability to make a land acknowledgement. My right to free speech protects my ability to criticize it. You're now criticizing my criticism. Congratulations. We've successfully demonstrated how free speech works. 😆
Noah, you have chosen a career dependent on the sanctity of the notion of free speech. Surely, you can take one man’s exercising his right to free speech without attempting to invalidate it with false claims of cultural theft or cultural disrespect.

Ben, your father led the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada. Surely we can survive one progressive expressing an opinion without declaring a national crisis over free speech.
I think a lot of people are getting tired of self-described “progressives” policing what we can and can’t say, and when we can or can’t say it. I could be wrong, but I suspect I’m not. The end.

Ben, a land acknowledgement recognizes the Indigenous peoples of the land you're standing on. You acknowledged somewhere else. The difference isn't ethnicity. It's geography. Why is this so difficult?
Noah, let's keep this simple. In Toronto, land acknowledgements open City Council meetings, school days, sporting events and concerts, over and over, every week. Nobody argues they diminish anyone else's ties to their place. I offered probably the first one ever for the Jewish people's connection to the Land of Israel. It took nothing from First Nations. You say ancestral connection to land matters. So what is the one difference here that bothers you?

Every people, Ben. Including Jews, Palestinians, & Indigenous peoples whose land you're standing on That's been my point from the beginning You've now written 2 lengthy replies explaining why ancestral connections matter, without acknowledging the people right beneath your feet
Noah, a land acknowledgement says a people's ancestral bond to a place survives displacement. Judaism was born in the Land of Israel. In 135 CE Rome renamed Judea "Syria Palaestina" to erase that bond. Jews have lived there ever since. "Halfway around the world" is where an empire scattered them. So, does the logic apply to every people, or every people except one? Pick.

You found Indigenous people expressing support for Israel. Okay? Indigenous peoples aren't a hive mind, and a photograph of a demonstration doesn't answer my point. But I do appreciate you invoking Indigenous voices while making their cultural expression the punchline.
Replying to @noahcites
You want to know what the Indigenous peoples of Canada have to say about Jews as indigenous to Israel? How about an interpretive dance?

Religion is explicitly protected under Canada's hate crime laws. But thank you for responding to a post about religious harassment with an insult and a misunderstanding of the Criminal Code. Very educational.
Religion is not a race you fucktard.

So walking with another man is gay if he has a child and wears skinny pants? Tom, I asked a question about walking down the street. You've invented an entire sexual orientation based on childcare arrangements and trousers.

It’s gay to decide to walk with another man knowing he’s going to be out with his child in a stroller. Also, it’s gay to wear skinny pants when you’re that fat

I don't want to give Kouvalis too much credit, but I've kinda picked up about the guy is; he's someone who does actually believe in something. The people rooting for a Brad win don't believe in anything except Chow needing to lose.
We don’t agree with Nick Kouvalis on much, but we do agree politicians need to have principles and that Brad Bradford has none. Brad went from a progressive who voted to defund the police to courting MAGA supporters. Why should you trust his word? Listen to Kouvalis yourself ⬇️

I don't believe the people cheering for Bradford winning today will be even talking about the city in a months time. Do you think Tate or S'ad or Brooks or Levant or Warmington will be focused on the unhoused in a Mayor Bradford City? Well, not as a city failure, certainly.

Okay @bluebottle931, You do realize Doug Ford's provincial government controls rent increases, right? The same government that exempted newer units from rent control in 2018. You've somehow managed to blame Olivia Chow for Ontario's rent regulations.
