I’ll take a shot at answering one of these good questions. These poor young people are not dying for "no reason". They’re dying because Vladimir Putin's Russia invaded Ukraine and Ukrainians don’t want to be murdered. I hope this helps.

Having been at Microsoft and worked with @merill I can attest this is 100% true. Microsoft and its customers would benefit greatly if it became more lean and more engineering focused. Also, sadly, a lot of good people will cut.
Shameless plug, I'm hiring. DM me if interested.
Folks,
I left Microsoft three months ago to start my own company. Two weeks after I left, my whole team in Australia was let go.
I see the hurt it’s causing my ex-colleagues, their families and their kids. Layoffs, forced relocations, PIPs. It’s brutal and I don’t want to brush past that.
But here’s my honest take.
Microsoft needs fewer people.
I’ve been on the inside. I’ve seen how things get built. Lots of small orgs. Layers on layers. Silos everywhere.
Here’s a real example.
The Entra team shipped managed identities back in 2017. No more secrets in code. A clear security win.
Then they tried to get the rest of Microsoft to adopt it. Very few teams did, and the ones that did moved at a snail’s pace. Every org had its own priorities and its own decision makers.
It took Microsoft getting hacked, and the Secure Future Initiative that followed, before things really moved.
Today almost every Microsoft app and service supports managed identity.
Six years, and a major breach, to get there.
In a world with agents and fewer people, that rollout would be possible across Microsoft in months, not years.
Microsoft already has everything else. The customers. The infrastructure. The scale.
What it needs is fewer people, leaning hard into agentic work.
Right now OpenAI and Anthropic are shipping at a pace Microsoft can’t match.
Microsoft has to change to survive.

🚨 BREAKING NEWS: Gmail Users Need to Read This!
If you have a Gmail account, you need to read this.
Google’s AI is now rifling through your inbox emails and attachments, bank statements, tax docs, medical letters, the whole stack. It was enabled by default, and that quiet rollout is now facing a class-action lawsuit.
Here are 5 steps to turn it off because the kill switch is buried in two different spots:

This is the canary in the coal mine, y'all. The AI math doesn't math. Microsoft is offering buyouts for nearly a quarter of it's workforce.
AI adoption for businesses is a 24-month journey in a perfect scenario. They aren't seeing adoption fast enough to offset their CapEx spending... and they aren't alone. Add Anthropic's measly revenue numbers (compared to their CapEx), and hopefully you get the point.
These aren't buyouts because Microsoft found efficiencies with AI, they are buyouts because they (the AI industry) spend trillions (collectively) building the best tools the world has ever seen, and no one knows how to use them. digitalmeld.io/blog/who-is-p…
BREAKING: Microsoft, $MSFT, is offering buyouts to 60,000 workers as part of the company’s efforts to cut costs amid AI adoption, per Bloomberg.
Personnel on select teams in the US, Canada, India, and the UK at a vice president level and below will be eligible.
This reflects ~27% of Microsoft's total workforce.

WARNING: STRONG LANGUAGE
President Trump escalated his invective against Norway, calling it a ‘shit house country’ and saying Norwegian immigrants are not welcome in the United States because the Nobel committee, based in the capital Oslo, has not awarded him a Peace Prize reut.rs/3U1joSt
You're right, @elonmusk. Someone has grown very rich off money flowing from Ukraine. I work in Starlink supply to Ukraine, so I see these numbers firsthand.
Ukrainians bought 117,000 terminals in September alone (~$42M), plus monthly subscriptions for each one. And that's just official commercial imports. Not counting government contracts, donor-funded deliveries, direct orders from your website or grey imports.
No laundry machines needed. It goes straight to SpaceX.

The speed limits on Starlink and Starshield are still there. The speed has not been restored. And the delivery of interceptors to protect us against Russian ballistic missiles is still delayed. We’re waiting for interceptors that were already agreed on. But they are still not coming. This is a real problem, because the Russians attack us almost every single day.
All of this is happening while we continue our quite successful operations on the front. We keep defending positions. Things have become harder – partly because of the Starlink and Starshield policies and speed limits. But our frontline is still holding and I am proud of how strong our people are.

There is something deeply wrong with a political system that allows one trillionaire to buy his own personal U.S. Senator.

Replying to @grok @NewsWire_US
@grok do I get it right:
1) a hostile dictatorship regime captures and jails an innocent US person;
2) The US appease the dictator, call him a "humanitarian", lift sanctions
3) the dictator releases the captured US person as a "gesture of good will"
4) Witkoff presents this as his huge diplomatic achievement
Trump: We were in the midst of negotiating and a lot of stupid people said why aren’t you putting Russian sanctions—
Collins: But you said you didn’t give anything for his release
Trump: If I didn’t do that, you wouldn’t have him coming back.
Collins: So you did give something.
Trump: You don’t know anything. You’re fake news CNN.
Collins: You’re saying you lifted the sanctions in exchange for his release?
Trump: You don’t know what you’re talking about. You’re a low IQ person. You’re a dummy.

SQLite is the most used database in the world, and its biggest weakness has always been the same: it runs on one machine, and if that machine dies, your data is gone. The usual fix is Litestream, but that's a Go binary you have to babysit.
So we (@platformatic) rewrote it in TypeScript.

I have been trying to think of what Trump’s hideous “ballroom” project reminds me of — and I finally have it — it is Nicolai Ceausescu’s infamous and unfinished House of the People in communist Romania, which also brought awfulness to a lovely downtown. It features a huge ballroom with niches for portraits of the dictator and his wife and a sliding roof so that a helicopter can enter and exit. The building also had a nuclear bunker. The aesthetic sense of the two men is much the same but Trump’s construction will probably be even worse.
