I am speechless. I'm staying off here today, as usual, but thought I'd share these wise words from the phenomenal Rebecca Solnit for anyone trapped doom scrolling who needs to read them. Then maybe shut this hellsite down and go for a walk. Breathe deep, look after yourselves.

Super clear and informative thread from the brilliant @beth_stratford, comprehensively debunking the arguments against rent controls (and the idea that house building will be enough to make homes affordable).
Many MPs urged gov't to include rent controls in Renters Rights Bill last week (see t.ly/VZ79-) But @mtpennycook & @AngelaRayner argued rent controls wld reduce supply of homes Short🧵w/ data to show this risk is small & can be mitigated, and benefits outweigh costs

"If our investment system is one of the foundations of a strong economy, the cracks in it go so deep that I sincerely doubt they are going to be fixed by Christmas." @oeufling incisively breaks down what exactly is wrong with Labour's dash for growth 🔽 christineberry.net/2024/09/l…

“But it turns out—quelle surprise—there isn’t a growth fairy. That the reasons why there hasn’t been much growth over the last 15yrs are complex & deep seated, & are not simply a result of the Tories too incompetent to find the switch marked ‘growth’…” christineberry.net/2024/09/l…

Great piece by @oeufling about Labour's desperate bid to stimulate growth *without* embracing direct public investment or structural change - and the risks associated with trying to deliver quick fix solutions to deep seated problems... christineberry.net/2024/09/l…

I was asked to write a short piece for @RenewalJournal on whether @UKLabour can be transformative. I decided to skip my usual rant on ownership and instead unpack the Starmerites' claims to be the "realists" in politics. First journal article in 2yrs so thoughts welcome!
In the new issue of Renewal, @oeufling argues that Labour should embrace a radical pragmatism in its environmental policies and overall programme. Free to read: journals.lwbooks.co.uk/renew…

🇬🇧 | NEW REPORT: The UK's tax system is fuelling regional inequality. Taxing income more than we tax wealth disproportionately benefits those in the South. This new report sets out a serious of reforms to overhaul our tax system. ippr.org/articles/supporting…

It's a topsy turvy day when the Mail and the Express are praising the organised left for warding off violence incited by exactly the kind of racist bile they've spent decades spewing out. But just for today, I'll take it. Well done everyone 👏💪💜

I don't have any wise words right now about what is happening and feel pretty helpless being stuck at home with chronic fatigue - grateful to all those out on the streets and helping rebuild and clean up - but this feels deeply true to me. And something we can all do.
Wherever you are, building community and connection is key. Our isolated, compartmented lives will not keep us safe, and we will not be able to draw on each others love, creativity and courage unless we are coming together to resist, strategise, build power & move together

The far-right did not wake up as geniuses one day and decide to target immigration services. @pritipatel sent them to us when she labelled us "lefty laywers" and "do-gooders". Any statements she makes this week which seem "sensible" are posthumous denials of accountability.

These riots started in Parliament. Rioters chant “stop the boats” and “we want our country back” - using language from politicians across the political spectrum. It’s not enough to call out violence, politicians need to stop normalising hate. In policy and practice.

You cannot shame me out of caring for young people who have harmed someone, and for their families. It won’t happen. I’m a youth worker, we practice non judgement. Meeting people who harm with care is fundamental to the healing of our communities. It doesn’t happen without that.

I've been reflecting a lot lately on who gets to define reality and how that constrains what we see or believe is possible - so this work on collective imagination by my colleagues at @jrf_uk feels so important ... esp. when the political discourse feels so bleak and limiting. 🌈

This new @jrf_uk research is just heartbreaking - and such an indictment of our politics that we are in the middle of an election campaign where this is barely even being talked about.
🗣️ Britain’s public services are staggering under the weight of hardship as primary schools and primary healthcare divert their resources to the needs of those struggling to afford the essentials Our report shows the impact of hardship on primary schools and primary healthcare🧵

That said, it does give me hope that frontline staff in schools & the NHS - despite everything, despite how overstretched and underfunded they are - still care and do what they can to help people who are struggling. Ordinary people do care - it's our politics that's broken.

As usual, @DrFrancesRyan nails it. Even leaving the policy aside, don't underestimate the psychological harm this rhetoric is doing to disabled people here and now: the rage, fear, internalised shame and sense of abandonment. Despicable on every level. theguardian.com/commentisfre…

Also just reflecting on the flip side of this: don't underestimate what a difference it makes when you stick up for us. It's easy to feel powerless in this country right now, but every small act of solidarity makes a big difference to people's well-being here and now.
