I recommend you read the article in full. The media has been full of reporting regarding the potential future risks of AIxBio for some time now, when the real, tangible risk is this: avian influenza burning through a mink farm in Utah. We are giving this beast too much room.

Nobody knows what to do': How Long COVID left Physics Girl searching for answers But on her honeymoon in Scotland, her big year got hit with what seemed like a minor snag. She got COVID-19. "The typical symptoms," she said, "like a sore throat and a cough and a stuffy nose. But it wasn't anything alarming." "I just deteriorated," she said. "First I couldn't run, I couldn't hike. And then I couldn't work, and then I couldn't walk anymore, and I became bedbound. And then I couldn't speak, and then I couldn't read or use my phone." Eventually, she was confined to her bed in a dark room, wearing dark glasses and noise-cancelling headphones to "take away every environmental stimulus." #LongCovid

Dounreay had a near Chernobyl style runaway reaction in 1968 and dumped the evidence, (most of the core bar the melted rods which could not be removed and are still there for you to see), down a low level waste shaft in the cliff. Despite dropping a tonne of boronated glass on top of it, it went critical in 1978, ejecting its contents as far as the foreshore and destroying the rock structure such that the sea bed and foreshore are now so contaminated that they cannot be remediated. I know because I made the documentary - though the runaway criticality that caused the shaft explosion was not included because that evidence only came to light later on. Never a full public inquiry nor lessons taken and learned. But let’s not get hung up on ‘outdated policies’ eh?
We must not forget that Dounreay helped keep the lights on in the glens. We have the site, the skills and the community to host a small modular reactor. The Scottish Government must move beyond outdated policies and unlock Highland energy opportunities. johnogroat-journal.co.uk/new…

This polar bear died of starvation in its homeland, which is supposed to be teeming with prey. Photographer and biologist Paul Nicklen, who has spent more than 30 years in the Arctic, says that during most of those years he only came across one dead polar bear, and then within just two weeks his team found two that had died of starvation. Polar bears rely on sea ice to hunt seals, and with rising temperatures and receding ice, the search for food becomes longer and more difficult, potentially ending with some of them dying of hunger.

From: Jeff Helfgott BREAKING🚨 A Michigan nurse lost her job and now faces up to a year in federal prison because a patient with a bloodied face walked out of the hospital before ICE could take him. Chloe Freeman, a registered nurse at Trinity Health Ann Arbor Hospital, is charged with "instigating or assisting escape," which carries up to a year in prison. She has pleaded not guilty. She goes back to federal court in Detroit on October 20. On May 28, Border Patrol agents went after a Mexican man in Ann Arbor. The agents say he ran, tripped over a curb and hit his face on the pavement. He was bleeding from the head when they brought him to the hospital, where staff saw in his paperwork that he was in ICE custody. After his CT scan, the FBI says Freeman took out his IV and walked him to the ambulance bay. Security footage shows him going out the doors with his face bandaged and bloody. Nobody has found him since. When the hospital questioned her in June, Freeman said she disagreed with ICE "separating people from their families." She said that with injuries like his, he "could have died." She also said no agents were in the room during the scan, so she didn't believe he was in custody at that point. Even the prosecutors' own announcement says agents stayed with him only until he was moved to imaging. Trinity Health fired her. She has since moved away. Shahad Atiya, an immigration attorney and law professor, said she has never seen this charge used in immigration cases, as Ruta Ulcinaite first reported in WXYZ Detroit (ABC 7). She expects it to become "a new set of charges" aimed at anyone who helps immigrants. Prosecutors charged a misdemeanor, not a felony. That means no grand jury ever had to approve the case. Grand juries in Los Angeles and Chicago have refused to indict anti-ICE protesters on felony charges. A petition calling for the charge to be dropped warns it tells healthcare workers that "showing compassion for a patient could cost them their freedom and their career." Nurses and hospital workers are being asked to show up at the Detroit courthouse on October 20 in their scrubs and lab coats. If you appreciate my posts, it would mean the world if you followed my page. Thank you for being here.

A global shortage of #cholera vaccines has forced a reduction from two doses to one for people in need. This weakens protection and leaves health authorities with a difficult choice: prevent outbreaks or respond to them. Learn more about the disease:

Yeah but it has to be a comparison at a certain noise level. This is difficult because the data is not available for most machines. Secondly, I think the long term total cost is a more important factor than $/CADR. $/cadr upfront cost is usually dwarfed in a year or so by total cost of filters and electricity and maintenance for a typical machine. Total cost is also affected by how long a machine lasts before it becomes trash for any reason. None of which appear in the $/CADR figure.

I did 18 days in the Orange County jail for sharing meals with the hungry and had to pay $2,000. A friend of mine was late on a payment and the police arrested him in Kentucky as he was giving a lecture to his students and he spent another 6 months in a Broward County jail.
41 states charge for what is known as cell rent. And even if you parole out early states like Florida will make you pay the TOTALITY per day of your original stay. One Black woman was billed $127,000 ($50 a day for 2,555 days) for the full seven years of her sentence despite only staying 10 months

They have literally gone insane. Gaza is under repeated strikes right now. Aircraft are flying extremely low, and their sounds are terrifying. People are fleeing their homes after the warnings. The situation is horrifying, and no one knows what will happen next. Do not stop talking about Gaza. Do not let the world forget the terror we live through every day.

Ah, must be the MA -1400. 1290 cfm on top speed but 70 dBa. I didn't know you had one that big. This makes me feel more hopeful for other large dimension machines. I honestly think a bqf based machine would have favorable specs in many ways, hepa could be fine if we want to bow to that, but I would make it a great big one, maybe 6 20x20x2 ones. I think that could be 1100cfm with 41.5 dBa and 25 watts. I am sad we have not been able to steer things away from the insistence on HEPA, a recently discovered reason is that it makes washable filters even less practical. most fundamentally we want to make progress and that kind of thing does hold us all back.

CNN found 24 of 40 Israeli captives in Gaza were killed by the IDF, but this is an obvious undercount. The Bibas children and their mom were killed in an airstrike, but Israel can’t admit that, and six others mentioned were killed by CO gas from a tunnel bombing. That’s 33 of 40.
Our latest report about the 40 hostages who were abducted alive on Oct 7, but died in captivity is based on interviews with dozens of hostage families and Israeli mil & gov't officials. And it's layered. So I want to break down the most important findings, beginning with... 1/🧵

People say 1,163 innocent civilians were killed on October 7th. That is, of course, not true. Lets do the math: 1) 274 of them were active IDF soldiers 2) 58 were Israel Police officers 3) 10 were Shin Bet personnel 4) 43 were community emergency squad members 5) 421 people were of reserve duty age 6) 70 were foreign workers 7) 7 IDF admits to killing by friendly fire Anyone is welcome to do the math. That leaves 270 innocent Israeli victims. Out of those, who knows how many were killed through the Hannibal directive? We are probably left with 100 and something. Every death is tragic. But this was a more precise military operation than anything the IDF does. And why the entire world has to mourn this, is a very good question.

I was hoping to do some experiments. As long as it's waterproof, I think the right combo of cleaners and maybe some ultrasound should be able to get the crap off, it's not that well stuck on there. I got some of the cleaner K&N uses for their filters, I'll also try laundry detergent etc. It's going to take a while though. I would probably be well on my way but fedex lost the filters I ordered, so I just got a single one locally instead. It kind of sucks to just have one but it should be a valid experiment. I'm not going to spend a ton of money or time on it, but it would be a significant realization if there were already a ton of generic filters in manufacture that are actually washable, and we knew how to wash them. In reality probably nobody will use it, I know, but I could build a demo machine with about 1/2 the cost per cubic meter that disposable filters can muster, including washing labor/cleaners etc. Also I think it has important implications for reliability as washable is inherently more reliable for several reasons, longer term. Esp if the filters are not actually any harder to make.

Covid introduced the idiot idea that it’s fine to infect children, because they’re ‘low risk’. They’re not born low-risk. It took many decades of hard work to make them low-risk. They were once the highest risk.
Child mortality has declined in all world regions. In 1950, almost one in four children worldwide died before their fifth birthday. In Africa, one in three children died. The chart shows the change since then. In every region, the mortality rate of children has declined. In Africa and Oceania, the child mortality rate declined 5-fold, in Asia 10-fold, and in Europe about 27-fold. Progress was not always steady. The sharp spike in Asia around 1960 was due to the “Great Leap Forward” famine in Mao’s China, the deadliest famine in recorded history. And the progress is far from finished. The global average has declined to 3.5%, but this still means that about 4.7 million children younger than five years died in 2025 — 13,000 children every single day. (written by @MaxCRoser)

Israel assassinated 25-year veteran journalist Shireen Abu Akleh in the West Bank on May 11, 2022. They shot her in the face. Shireen Abu Akleh was christian. She was an American citizen. Israel didn't care. To them, all that mattered was that Abu Akleh was Palestinian and that she told the stories of Palestinians in occupied Palestine. At first the Israeli regime said Shireen was killed by Palestinian gunfire. When that story became implausible, Israel switched to "yes, the IDF shot her, but it was an accident". Another lie. Israel has been killing journalists since long before Oct 2023. Reporters Without Borders documents 43 journalists killed by Israel between 2000 and 2023. 2 were European journalists. 263 journalists have been killed by Israel in Gaza and the West Bank since the start of the genocide. In fact, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists, Israel has committed more targeted killings and been responsible for more journalists' deaths than any other government military since 1992, when they started keeping records. For the Israeli regime, anyone who dares to report the truth of what has been happening on the ground in occupied Palestine is considered a legitimate target. Free Palestine.
