How a new technique invented by Renaissance Venetian artists eventually led to modernism, and why modernism is so sticky even though most people hate it. Look down

Political shifts among the American electorate in 2022, 2024, and 2026. Voters are swinging back and forth: it’s clear that they’re dissatisfied with both parties, and in each election cycle, they punish the one in power. I wonder how long and how far this pendulum will keep swinging. And one more thing: the next time you’re tempted to say, “This won’t change anything—Trump’s (or Biden and Harris’) voters don’t care; they’ll vote for him anyway,” bite your tongue. The core electorate is never the deciding factor. The outcome of an election is always decided by people like these, who are tossed back and forth.
The breadth of the demographic swing against the GOP this midterm is all the most striking because we saw a comparably consistent swing *to* the GOP only 4 years ago, in 2022. Data from the fantastic newly released @APNORC Civic Health & Elections poll.

Has anyone started the “This was all part of Trump’s master plan” spin yet? “The Dems fell into the 4D chess master’s trap”? That kind of thing?

The news of the Democrats’ victory is mixed for me: on the one hand, anything that might limit this madman’s power is already a good thing. On the other hand, I don’t expect anything good from the Democrats themselves. But today there is one piece of unambiguously good news: in California, a referendum proposal to impose a 5% tax on billionaires has failed. Not all votes have been counted yet, but right now the proposal is at only 43.9%, and the chances of it reaching 50% are slim. At the same time, the counterproposal has won: a constitutional amendment prohibiting the introduction of new taxes on property and personal capital. It has garnered 54.6%. I’ll say it for the hundredth time: referendums are better than elections. In referendums, the majority tends to vote sensibly—even in a state like California, which, judging by election results, seems thoroughly left-leaning. When people choose between two specific alternatives rather than between two pigs in a poke, they usually make the right choice.

I just got up and took a quick look at the news, but I can already see that my prediction from yesterday—that the Democrats’ victory would be more modest than the polls suggested—didn’t pan out. The Democratic Party has won both houses of Congress, and in the Senate, it looks like it will have even more seats than the most optimistic projections predicted: The Democrats have taken Senate seats from the Republicans in seven states: Texas, Kansas, Ohio, Iowa, North and South Carolina, and Maine—and they may do so in three more: Alaska, Nebraska, and Mississippi, where not all ballots have been counted yet. In Texas, a Democrat won the Senate race for the first time since 1988; in Kansas, for the first time since 1932. Trump has already stated that he will work with the Democrats, but the Democrats may have other plans. This victory for the Democratic Party is clearly Trump's doing, first and foremost, secondly, that of the majority of Republicans, who unquestioningly lined up to kiss his ass, and thirdly, that of those voters who kept repeating, “That’s what I voted for,” even though it had long been obvious even to a hedgehog that Trump was leading America into the abyss.

💥 Czech Greens/EFA MEP Markéta Gregorová claims to have been detained in Beijing for 1.5 hours in what she called “pseudo-scare tactics” over the arrest of a Chinese national accused of spying in the Czech Republic. Gregorová said she was the only delegate out of 15 EU officials who faced such problems at border control upon landing in Beijing Capital Airport on Oct 26. A vocal critic of the CCP, Gregorová said she faced extensive questioning from Chinese officials despite presenting her diplomatic passport and an official invitation letter. Gregorová is the vice-chair of the European Parliament’s China group, and was travelling to the Chinese capital as part of a delegation from the parliament focusing on trade talks between Brussels and Beijing. The visit follows recent talks between EU trade commissioner Maroš Šefčovič and Chinese officials. Gregorová claims she was banned from using her phone during the ordeal and had her passport confiscated. euobserver.com/246452/czech-…

🚨 “I feel like I’m still in Iraq” — this is how bad the situation is in the UK. Asylum seekers who fled religious persecution in Islamic countries for freedom in Britain are now considering claiming asylum elsewhere, because they continue to be persecuted here for criticising Islam. Dheyaa — a former Muslim who converted to Christianity — fled religious persecution in Iraq and came to Britain. Exercising what he thought was his new-found freedom, he burned a copy of the Koran in symbolic protest against the ideology that had persecuted him. Rather than protecting his right to free speech and protest, West Yorkshire Police swiftly arrested him on suspicion of inciting religious hatred. He was then handed Orwellian bail conditions banning him from discussing religion on social media. The Free Speech Union stepped in, defending Dheyaa’s right to free speech and helping him secure the removal of those bail conditions. Earlier this year, before the Government unveiled its Islamophobia definition, FSU Case Director @BenBarryJones asked Dheyaa what he made of the prospect. Dheyaa said he felt as though he was still in Iraq, and that he would look to flee the UK. Hamit Coskun, another asylum seeker who burned a copy of the Koran in protest against the persecution he faced in Turkey, also considered fleeing to the US after he was convicted of a public order offence. Shockingly, the CPS had originally charged him for harassing “the religious institution of Islam”, long before the Government had any state-approved definition of “Islamophobia”. With the FSU’s backing, Hamit’s conviction was overturned on appeal. The CPS then tried to reinstate it at the High Court, and lost again. The last thing Britain needs is a state-approved Islamic blasphemy code. One is already operating. Watch the full interview with Dheyaa on the FSU YouTube channel 👇

The Democrats are gonna win tomorrow, but they're so divided and headless. You've got: * Leftists who still think Palestine is everything * Angry old ladies who hate Trump but otherwise have no idea what they want * Intellectuals who are still just really really mad that Mark Zuckerberg is rich * Center-left Climate Libs who have basically just given up and think China owns the future * Weird splinter factions of woke Bluesky cancel culture people running around calling everyone anti-trans * Abundance?

Lots of people moved their money to Paraguay because of its friendly tax legislation and now woke up to found their money frozen. Moving your money from a developed country, however bad it may be at the moment, to a poor one, is almost always a bad idea. Poor countries are poor for a reason.
I hate being right about this. This morning the central bank froze ueno, one of the country's largest banks. About 3 million customers. App off. Cards off. Deposits frozen. The guarantee covers roughly $30K per person. The central bank can't promise anything above that. Diversification is key. Never hold all your funds in one country, one currency or one bank.

Closing messages from Republicans today: 1. Please, we beg you, give us more time. 2. Look at this reflecting pool photo. 3. We are bad, but Dems are worse! 4. We know you’re struggling, but have you considered transgender athletes? 5. The economy is great. Stop complaining. 6. Everything is Biden’s fault. 7. Please ignore the corruption. 8. The polls are fake unless we’re winning. Inspiring stuff!

There has been a "no war, no deal" dynamic in U.S.-Iran relations for much of the last four decades. It's the norm. What's different since 2026, however, is the unprecedented naval blockade and the marrying of the economic and military pressure. The reality is there is no happy ending with a neat diplomatic solution to this conflict. It will only end once the Iranian regime ends. And hastening that end is in the U.S. national security interest.
🚨CIA Director John Ratcliffe is advising Trump to maintain the "no war, no deal" status quo and allow the economic pressure campaign to continue, sources said 🚨Ratcliffe told Trump that prolonged economic pain will induce Iran to make more concessions — or create enough instability inside the country that citizens revolt

Je to tak
Vítejte v Česku, kde opozice protestuje proti vlastnímu programu. ODS chtěla zrušit koncesionářské poplatky už v roce 2009. Piráti je měli v programu v roce 2017. A dnes kvůli úplně stejnému návrhu straší koncem demokracie a svolávají lidi do ulic. A splníme to.
